General: Oak hickory. upland. Mature, 1 mile outside of Des Moines. Specific: Flying from tree to tree - hickory, oak, dead limbs
|
The documentation form by Bery Engebretsen is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Eugene Armstrong and Eloise Armstrong. | Elimination of similar species: From the moment I heard the call, it was clearly different. The bird was a PeeWee. It called frequently to several types of calls; only one of which seemed similar to our Eastern. | The original documentation form event occurred around 11:00:00/11:15:00.

The documentation form by Steve Dinsmore is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Thomas H. Kent and Bob Myers were submitted later. Other observers include Ross Silcock, Francis Moore, Eugene Armstrong, and Eloise Armstrong. | Elimination of similar species: The smaller size and relatively small bill eliminated Killdeer and Wilson's Plover. The pale appearance, dark legs and bill, markings on the head, and lack of a dark breastband [sic] eliminates Semipalmated [sic] Plover. The dark legs and bill, brown (now white) rump, and dark ear patch eliminates Piping Plover. | The original documentation form event lasted from 13:34:00/13:52:00, 14:16:00/14:35:00 and 18:15:00/18:55:00.

Other observers include Chris Pilliod, Jim Sandrock, Cal Knight, Jane Fuller, Charles Fuller, and James Huntington. | Elimination of similar species: The only species I could not eliminate on the basis of field marks observed was Yellow-footed, which according to Tom Kent (telephone conversation) is not a known vagrant. More objectively, the Yellow-footed is supposed to be larger than a Herring Gull. As stated above, this bird was about the size of a Herring Gull, or perhaps a little smaller. I don't feel it was larger than a Herring Gull. Seabirds (Harrison) warns of possible confusion with dark race Herring Gull. I have not heard of this race occuring [sic] in Iowa. In any event, the foot coloring was incorrect for Herring Gull, which has pink legs in contrast to this bird's yellow legs. | The original documentation form event occurred at various times.

The documentation form by Robert Cecil is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include John Cecil, Tom Kent, and Francis Moore. | Elimination of similar species: Only probable similar species is Herring, which has contrasty wings - dark trailing edge and darker wingtips. The Thayer's were obviously a lighter shade of brown than any Herrings present. I judged these birds to be somewhat smaller than any Herring. I could not totally rule out first year Glaucous-winged. According to NGS, Glaucous-wing has less mottling or scalloping. The Keokuk birds were obviously mottled. | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:05:00/11:30:00.

The documentation form by Dawn L. DeVore is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: After getting the bird book, I took my knowledge of the birds in the area and my mental picture and went to work. I ruled out the turkey vulture because the bird was too streamlined like a tern. I looked at the terns, soon realizing that there were no almost completely black terns. Thus I turned to the gulls. I knew it had to be a water area type bird because of its body and bill shape. Remembering the bill I quickly ruled out the gulls. Thus I turned to the cormorants but the tail was wrong, the neck was too long and more so the cormorant was out of the picture. Thinking I recalled hearing about a sighting of a rare bird in Iowa, only the night before had I looked at an outline of its body shape. Bingo! That was it! The shapes matched but what was the name? I went through the bird section page by page. Then there it was - the Magnificent Frigatebird. This was it; almost all black, large yet streamlined, "forked" or V shaped "tail", and that unique bill. Then the fact that the bird I saw had no red and two side by side white breast areas confirmed that it was a female Magnificent Frigatebird. | The original documentation form event lasted from 12:45:00/12:50:00.

[...] I first saw this bird flying, and the underwing was translucent throughout the primaries to the end of the wing (Herring Gull had dark outer primaries, although most also had a lighter window type area medial to this dark area). The bird was about the same size or a little smaller than the Herrings. The upperwing in flight was much lighter in the primaries than the first winter herrings. [...] It had a more rounded head than the herrings. [...] It's color was more uniform than the herrings and also lighter- a brownish color. There was a dark smudge around the eye. The feather edging (whitish) provided more contrast with the brown on the back than in the herrings, and the folded tail was brownish, not black. When in flight the tail band was brownish not blackish like the herrings. | The original documentation form event lasted from 13:15:00/13:45:00.

If there was any problem with this bird being anything it was a Glaucous Gull of the same age. However the bird was smaller than the Herring Gulls that were on the roost. Long wings will rule out the rare small race of Glaucous Gull. There are not to [sic] many birds that have primaries lighter than the mantle in the sitting bird.

The documentation form by Ann Johnson forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Jim Sinclair, Raymond Cummins, and James Fuller were submitted. Other observers include Marlys Huff, David Youngblut, Pete Wickham, John Daniel, and Ken Lowder. | Elimination of similar species: Great Black-backed Gull- The bird was not large enough nor was the bill as massive. The great black-backed should also show a whiter head and lighter inner primaries and the back would be more of a checkerboard than the scaliness of this bird. Herring Gull- Because of variability, eliminating the herring was more problematic. Size was not particularly helpful initially in that this bird was near the second-year herring gull for such a brief time that I really couldn't make comparison. The variable sizes of ring-bills were of no help because next to some it looked huge and next to others it was only some larger. Some subtle differences were helpful in making this bird "look different" but I don't believe they could be considered sufficient. The checkered, scaly look was more pronounced than most juvenile herrings. The wings seemed long as they extended beyond the tail. The bill was entirely black and the tail band more distinct than most juvenile herrings. The color distinction between the head/tail and body from a distance were also helpful. The clincher, however, was during flight when no "windows" were visible on the inner primaries and the dark secondary coverts created a wide, dark trailing edge to the wing. These flight indicators, as well as size differential, were confirmed on the 23 October sighting. | The original documentation form event lasted from 15:10:00/16:00:00 and 16:15:00/16:40:00.

The documentation form by Steve Dinsmore forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Jim Sinclair, Ray Cummins, and Thomas H. Kent were submitted. Other observers include Tim Schantz, Jim Fuller, and many unidentified observers. | Elimination of similar species: The only species with which this bird could be confused is Ring-billed Gull. The tail and wing patterns, generally darker coloration, large eye, and smaller bill all eliminate first-winter Ring-billed Gull. Identification to subspecies was based on tail pattern and more extensive dark color on head and underparts. | The original documentation form event lasted from 07:20:00/08:30:00.

The documentation form by Steve Dinsmore forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Ann Johnson, Mark Proescholdt, Randall Pinkston, Thomas H. Kent, Raymond Cummins, Jim Fuller, Carl Bendorf, Tanya Bray, Peter Petersen, and Diane Porter were submitted. Other observers include James Huntington, Alan Grenon, Rick Wright, Jim Scheib, Eloise Armstrong, Eugene Armstrong, Bob Myers, B.J. The documentation form by Ann Johnson is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: The body and bill structure eliminated all but hooded gulls and the brown plumage indicated a first year bird. Size close to Ring-billed, in addition to plumage already described, eliminated some of the smaller hooded gulls. The most likely candidate for confusion would be the Franklin's Gull. Juvenile Franklin's shows a hooded pattern early in development rather than a brown wash on the head. Franklin's tail band would also be incomplete with white feathers showing on the outer edge. It would also show fewer dark primaries, with the inner flight feathers more approximating the mantle and inner wing color. No other small gull has this characteristic. | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:45:00/12:10:00 and 15:30:00/14:00:00 [sic].
