General: border between an extensive tract of riverbottom forest and a half-mile stretch of corn and soybean fields (with large patches of unharvested beans). At the north edge of the fields was a road, followed by a wooded ridge. Specific: Perched at the edge of a narrow screen of trees that extended out from the forest, between two fields. [drawing]
|
The documentation form by Michael Newlon is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Richard DeCoster. | Elimination of similar species: The three species with which confusion is most likely are the bald eagle (imm) and red-tailed and rough-legged hawks (dark-phase). Several points rule out these species. (1) Size: the body length of the bird was 2&1/2-3 times that of a crow that perched in the same tree; the two hawks are not nearly this large. (2) tail pattern: imm. bald eagles sometimes show tails that are darker at the tip than at the base, but all such individuals that I have seen have had a gradual transition from dark to light, rather than the sharp boundary that this bird showed. Adult melanistic redtails usually have red tails; imm birds should show dark tails crossed by darker bands. (3) Wing pattern: imm bald eagles have white in the wing, but this is usually in the wing-lining rather than the primaries and secondaries; dark-phase rough-legs usually have the primaries and secondaries entirely white. (4) build: bald eagle has longer neck, and more massive head and bill, than golden; this bird had the general proportions of a buteo. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:00:00/09:30:00.

The documentation form by Michael Newlon is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Carol S. Newlon. | Elimination of similar species: proportions, uniformly pale primaries would rule out herring; size/build rules out imm. glaucous. Bill much less heavy than imm. glaucous-winged. Remaining question is whether this bird is (over) a Thayer's Gull or a Kumlien's gull, presently considered separate species but widely suspected of being conspecific. Thayer's is extremely variable, and the limits of its variability are not well known, especially for imm. plumages. [Dwight says of his series of ad. thayeri, 'no two are alike'. It seems probable that there is clinal variation from west to east (thayeri - kumliesi [sic] - nominate glaucoides) and even possible that thayeri interbreeds with argenlatus at the western end of its range.] In addition several plumage descriptions in the literature may be assigned to birds of [illegible] age. Be that as it may: L. glaucoides glaucoides is supposed to have pale warm-brown primaries as a 1-W & paler, nearly whitish areas as a 2-W (though photos in grant's [sic] book show one 2-W with pale-brown primaries concolor with coverts). L. glaucoides kumlieni (in Dwight's plates) is assigned v. pale primaries as a 1-W, with slightly darker outer webs; would look uniform pale grey at any distance. His 2-W has darker primaries, again with slightly darker outer webs [I suspect these assignments should be reversed.] L. thayeri in published description is supposed to have darker primaries still, though not so dark as those of imm. Herring gulls, and lacking contrast with mantle. However some west coast thayeri-type gulls are very pale - though their back color is grey-brown rather than the warmer pale tan of L. glaucoides. (It is possible that these are really kumlieni but little data exists.) It is the similarity of the Cone Marsh Bird to one I photographed in Cal. that convinced me to classify it as thayeri - though kumleni cannot be unequivocally ruled out | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:10:00/12:30:00.

The documentation form by Jim Dinsmore is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Bery Engebretsen and Dennis Thompson. | Elimination of similar species: I spent a long time puzzling over these birds, both in the field and later when I had several references to consult. None of the guides I looked at showed a bird that looked like these. Common (a small one): removed on the basis of size (birds too small for Common Loon), the thinner and bicolored bill, and the color pattern on the neck. At this time of year, all of the Common Loons I have seen (and saw on Saylorville that day) were distinctly white on the front of the neck with some partial bands of brown extending back in to the white. Pacific Loon: Eliminated on behavior (head posture), lack of a distinct dark/white line along the side of the neck, lack of chin straps across neck, and presence of brown on front of neck. Also the gray/brown contrast between neck and back would point away from Pacific but not eliminate it. Red-throated Loon: This is what I first thought the birds were but as I viewed them, I convinced myself several times that they were Pacific Loons. However, the combination of characters listed above seem to eliminate the other two possible species and also are positive characters for the Red-throated Loon. One character that puzzled me was the size of the bill. At least some of the guides (Advanced Birding esp) show the Red-throated Loon as having a tiny bill, much smaller than on this bird but those illustrations do not match those in other guides which emphasize more the shape of the bill than the size. | The original documentation form event lasted from 07:45:00/08:45:00.

The documentation form by W. Ross Silcock is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: The only similarly - appearing species remotely possible here would be the Mottled Duck, which I have seen in Louisiana. The Mottled Duck has a much cleaner) cut appearance than the Black Duck and if at all to be expected, would be more likely in the spring. | The original documentation form event lasted from 10:15:00/10:45:00.
