Walter Rosene Jr. was born May 15, 1912 to Walter Rosene and Freda Rosene in Ogden, Iowa. Rosene attended Iowa State University where he studied Forestry and Horticulture. After graduation he began taking graduate courses in zoology and entomology at Iowa State and eventually received his master’s degree in wildlife management from Auburn University. Rosene married Kathryn Giles in 1938 and the couple had two children together, James and Walter. During World War II Rosene served as a signal officer on the USS St. Paul cruiser. Rosene started a career with the United States Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service as a Research Biologist. During his work with the Fish and Wildlife Service Rosene wrote three books and multiple journal articles on wildlife management. When he wasn’t working Rosene was active in many organizations, including the National Wildlife Society, the Audubon Society, the American Museum of American History, the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union, the Alabama Ornithological Society, the American Numismatic Society, the Kiwanis Club of Gadsden and the Explorer’s Club of New York. Walter Rosene Jr. died December 30, 2005 in Gadsden, Alabama. |
