Historical Notes Mary L. Davis Bailey was born July 29, 1861 to Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Davis in Sioux City, Iowa. Mary spent her childhood in Sioux City and continued to live there after she married Henry M. Bailey on June 21, 1888. Together they had four children, three sons and one daughter. As a young child Mary would go birding with her father, a hobby that continued to grow into her adult years. Mary was the first secretary of the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union, serving from 1923 to 1925 and then again from 1929-1931. Mary was also the president of the Sioux City Bird Club. She was also a devoted member of the National Audubon Society and the Wilson Ornithological Club. When Mary was 59 years old she started taking summer courses on Ornithology at Cornell University, where she attended classes for 3 consecutive summers. Mary continued to be a dedicated birder until her death on December 14, 1955.
