The bird certainly had the overall coloration of a first year Iceland Gull. Bird was located on East side of Sweet Marsh, which is outside of Tripoli to the East. Observation was on a dike that comes off of and South of parking lot on second road going to the marsh as you proceed North from the Southern part of the Marsh. See map for location, at asterisk.

Habitat bird was found in was a grassy area about 2' to 2 1/2' tall about 2' from dike and extending approximately 50' from dike. All around this particular area was large concentrations of cattails and sedges. Water was approximately 2" to 4" deep in area of sighting with deeper water on 3 sides of the area and the dike on the fourth side.

A red-tail might have one or the other white, but not both tail and head in my experience. Also the red-tail usually has a darker shade of brown on its middle belly, if it has color there. Slaty-backed Gull - The biggest problem - I felt this bird was not dark mantled enough was too heavily bodied + too much of a domed forehead. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:35:00/09:45:00, 10:35:00/11:00:00, 12:40:00/12:52:00 on January 15, 1991 and 09:25:00/09:35:00 on January 16, 1991.

Petersen and Jim Fuller. | Elimination of similar species: Surf Scoter is another all dark bird, but it would have a much larger bill that extends on the same angle as a flattened forehead. The definite gray cheek and throat are not present on Surf Scoter. Female Ruddy ducks should be much browner and again have a flattened forehead in line with a larger bill.
