The documentation form by Ann Johnson is only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Mike Thomas. | Elimination of similar species: Although I understand the difficulty in identification of fall western sandpipers, the Baird's and white-rumped were eliminated because of wing length. The least sandpiper was eliminated by leg color and bill shape/size. The most difficult elimination was that of the semipalmateds, especially since other semipals were present in the area. After careful observation and comparison, however, the prototypical western sandpiper bill was too obvious to make the bird into a semipalmated. The bill was enough longer and had an obvious droop. The others in the area had varying bill sizes but none had the general shape of this bird. Consequently, I believe this was a late date western sandpiper. | The original documentation form event lasted from approximately 15:00:00/15:10:00.

[...] Note that we saw a single Semipalmated Sandpiper in the same flock of shorebirds. The Semipalmated Sandpiper had a shorter, thicker bill, more of a brown wash on the breast, and frequented the edge of the mudflat rather than wading in the water. | The original documentation form event lasted from 15:30:00/16:45:00.

The documentation form by Dawn L. DeVore is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: After getting the bird book, I took my knowledge of the birds in the area and my mental picture and went to work. I ruled out the turkey vulture because the bird was too streamlined like a tern. I looked at the terns, soon realizing that there were no almost completely black terns. Thus I turned to the gulls. I knew it had to be a water area type bird because of its body and bill shape. Remembering the bill I quickly ruled out the gulls. Thus I turned to the cormorants but the tail was wrong, the neck was too long and more so the cormorant was out of the picture. Thinking I recalled hearing about a sighting of a rare bird in Iowa, only the night before had I looked at an outline of its body shape. Bingo! That was it! The shapes matched but what was the name? I went through the bird section page by page. Then there it was - the Magnificent Frigatebird. This was it; almost all black, large yet streamlined, "forked" or V shaped "tail", and that unique bill. Then the fact that the bird I saw had no red and two side by side white breast areas confirmed that it was a female Magnificent Frigatebird. | The original documentation form event lasted from 12:45:00/12:50:00.

White eyebrow on Pectorals did not broaden behind eye cap not as richly colored in Pectorals. Pectorals had streaking across buff breast wash uniformly to lower edge of buff. Back of Sharp-tailed seemed more uniformly rich brown than those of the Pectorals. Birds all departed downstream on Miss. before photos could be attempted. | The original documentation form event lasted from 15:50:00/15:55:00.

The documentation form with an addendum by Ann Johnson is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: Palm Warbler - no streaking on breast; chestnut cap not evident; streaking was black; breeding plumage unlikely on this date Pine Warbler - belly and undertail coverts bright yellow; wingbars not as distinct as the wing was not as dark nor the bars as white: streaking on the sides darker than a pine [...] Magnolia Warbler - Magnolia's body and wings too dark; adult eliminated because of no streaking on breast (only sides) and no black facial mask; immature does not have heavy enough streaking nor yellow extending up the face and around the eye far enough and the wingbars are too contrasting (black and white) Cape May Warbler - vibrant yellow undertail coverts would seem to by and large eliminate the Cape May, especially when combined with no streaking on the breast and belly; wing bars were two distinct pale yellowish markings, not white or blotched together Blackburnian Warbler - unstreaked back; no distinct cheek patch; no white wing bars on dark wings Blackpoll/Bay-breasted Warbler - unstreaked back; primary identification of fall blackpoll is white undertail coverts which eliminates this bird immediately. Also this complex normally has more distinct white wing bars on darker wings and the streaking on the sides is not the stark black on brilliant yellow but a more muted yellowish wash. | The original documentation form event lasted from 18:45:00/18:45:00.

That evening when I returned from work I checked my Golden, Peterson, N.G.S. and Audubon Master Guide for their accounts of the Townsend's and similar species. I eliminated the following; Hermit Warbler - no cheek patch: Blackburnian - dosn't [sic] have a black throat: Black-throated Green - has solid back color and cheek patch not as bold, no black cap. Of the references mentioned, the N.G.S. has the most accurate illustration of the birds head but I can't verify that the bird I saw did or didn't have yellow under the eye. | The original documentation form event lasted from approximately 07:20:00/07:20:45.

Other observers include Ross Silcock, Francis Moore, Eugene Armstrong, and Eloise Armstrong. | Elimination of similar species: The smaller size and relatively small bill eliminated Killdeer and Wilson's Plover. The pale appearance, dark legs and bill, markings on the head, and lack of a dark breastband [sic] eliminates Semipalmated [sic] Plover. The dark legs and bill, brown (now white) rump, and dark ear patch eliminates Piping Plover. | The original documentation form event lasted from 13:34:00/13:52:00, 14:16:00/14:35:00 and 18:15:00/18:55:00.

The documentation form by Steve Dinsmore is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Anotther documentation form by Ross Silcock was submitted later. | Elimination of similar species: similar species eliminated above [...] This bird was slightly bigger than a Least and was much chunkier. The bird had dark legs, seen in direct comparison with the dark legs of Baird's Sandpipers and the yellowish legs of the Least Sandpipers. This bird was also still in basic plumage, making it much paler in color than the other peeps. [...] The bill was straight, dark, and much thicker at the base and the tip than the bill of a Baird's or Least sandpiper [sic]. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:20:00/09:35:00.

The documentation form by Mary Jo Hartogh is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include John Hartogh and Annjean Hartogh. | Elimination of similar species: Compared it with a bald eagle and red-tailed hawk which does not have large reddish patches where the legs would be held in flight, nor the outline inside the wings in the same color. A red-tail might have one or the other white, but not both tail and head in my experience. Also the red-tail usually has a darker shade of brown on its middle belly, if it has color there. The rough-legged has a dark tail band which at that proximity should have been seen and its color is also a darker brown. | The original documentation form event lasted from 08:25:00/08:26:00.
