General: Recently plowed field with several pothole ponds Specific: The bird stayed in the waterways that led to the ponds. These areas were wet and contained no vegetation. These two plovers have streaked throats which this bird did not have. These two plovers have streaked breasts which this bird did not have. The white above the eye of this bird was clear and contained no streaking as does the Black-bellied Plover. Other observers include Michael Bornstein. \| Elimination of similar species: [...] The bird was most similar to the dark phase rough-legged hawk (Bureo lagopus) in size and general shape, but the latter species lacks the deep rust coloration on the upper wing coverts, scapulars, and upper back, and also has some dark banding on the outer one-half of the tail. Although by no means a conclusive characteristic, the subject bird did not hover during the period we observed it, a characteristic typical of hunting Rough-legged hawks. Lake	The documentation form by James Scheib is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. \| Elimination of similar species: I was thinking that it was a Boneparte's [sic] Gull, but the bill was the wrong color and the gray hood was prominent like in the field guide for the Black-legged Kittiwake. No other sparrow has a rounded blackear mark completely surrounded by white.
