Other observers include John Cecil, Eugene Armstrong, and Eloise Armstrong. | Elimination of similar species: Northern Goshawk- Although Goshawks have been known to show pointed wings, they are never as pointed as a Falcon's. I have seen many Northern Goshawks and jizz alone would rule this one out. I saw no barring on the tail. One of the prime field marks on a Goshawk are the bright white undertail coverts which this bird did not have. The bird in question also lacked a dark crown. Peregrine Falcon- Size. No dark helmet. Jizz (mentioned above). The bird lacked overall contrast of a Peregrine Falcon. Juveniles would be brown. Prairie Falcon- Color. Prairies are a brown bird in all plumages. The underwing was uniform with no black axillaries. Habitat. Prairies feed almost exclusively on small mammals. | The original documentation form event occurred around 15:30:00.

Upon returning home, however, we found in Bent, "The note of the Smooth-billed ani has been called a wailing or whining whistle - resembling the notes of the wood duck." Our bird's call note was not a whistle at all. And then we found in Pough's Eastern Land Birds under Smooth-billed ani, "The two anis are hard to tell apart except by note, the whining notes of this species being in sharp contrast to the soft double note of the Groove-billed." So for my part, that settled it that our bird was a Groove-billed ani. | The original documentation form event occurred in the afternoon

The documentation form by Ann Johnson and Jim Bangma is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: The lack of a pointed tail eliminated even a young Ring-necked Pheasant (confirmed later in the week with observations). Sharp-tailed Grouse have been released in the Loess Hills, but they show a more pointed tail with white at the edges and their flanks are more spotted than barred. Ruffed Grouse has a fan-shaped tail which matches the body color and has a dark subterminal band. We had no doubt that these birds were Prairie Chickens. Lesser Prairie Chicken cannot be eliminated by our sighting but is dismissed based on location and habitat (tall grass vs. short grass prairie). The question of origin then arises. The closest releases of grouse have been Sharp-tailed in the Loess Hills south of Sioux City, but our observations eliminated Sharp-tailed. Greater Prairie Chickens have most recently been released in Ringgold County, some 150-200 miles to the southeast. I discussed possible releases with some birders in the area and no one had any knowledge of released birds. On the other hand, Greater Prairie Chicken nests in South Dakota fairly close to the Iowa border. This map shows the relative abundance of the bird in the plains states based on Breeding Bird Surveys. We therefore feel that it is most likely that these birds come from a native population nearby and might possibly have been a family group. | The original documentation form event lasted from 07:20:00/07:22:00.

Another documentation form by Ann Johnson was submitted later. | Elimination of similar species: Double-crested is smaller, with a much thinner neck. There is a noticeable transition from the thin neck to the larger head. In this bird, there was no noticeable widening from the neck to the head. Additionally, Double-crested has a proportionally much smaller and weaker bill. Double-crested's forehead slopes more evenly into the bill. While these differences may be difficult to see in single birds without comparative experience, in direct comparison they are significant. Additionally, the orange facial skin combines with the gular pouch to accentuate the overall orange color of the face. Other extralimital black cormorants can be ruled out on size alone, additionally, most have thinner necks and smaller bills than even Double-crested. | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:00:00/11:02:00.

Great Black-backed Gull
Triboji Beach
N. end of West Okoboji Lake in an area called Triboji Beach on the end of the dock of Earl Rose 1/2 block east of Lee's Resort. Saw same bird fly out into the water.
Large fresh water "blue lake" with sandy shore. Shoreline all developed in housing + resorts.
The documentation form by Linda Hinshaw forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Douglas Harr was submitted. Other observers include Earl Rose, Fleta Rose, Robert Hinshaw, Gwen Hedin, Curt Hedin, Loraine Wallace, Pearle Osher, LaVonne Foote, and Nina Loehr. | Elimination of similar species: It was too large to be a lesser Black Backed Gull + legs were flesh colored, not yellow. Also much too large to be the Western Gull listed in the Golden Field Guide - 'Birds of North America." | The original documentation form event lasted from 18:30:00/18:50:00 and 19:30:00/20:15:00.

Great Black-backed Gull
Saylorville Lake
Saylorville Reservoir - Polk Co.
Large, man-made lake - sandy beaches
The documentation form by Robert K. Myers is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Eugene Armstrong and Eloise Armstrong. | Elimination of similar species: The gull was too big and had too large of a bill for herring gull. The checkered back + very contrasty head + upper breast with lower are not consistent with herring. Basically size of bird + its bill eliminated most everything. | The original documentation form event lasted from 18:30:00/18:45:00.

The documentation form by Steve Dinsmore is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Paul Martsching was submitted later. | Elimination of similar species: Second winter Herring Gull eliminated by size, bill size, lack of a gray mantle, lack of streaking on the head and underparts, lack of a window on the upperwing, by the all white tail with a dark band at the tip, and by the very dark underside of the primaries. Second winter Lesser Black-backed Gull eliminated by smaller size, browner uppertail, and heavily streaked head and underparts. | The original documentation form event lasted from approximately 16:00:00/16:15:00 on November 30, 1986 and 15:55:00/16:08:00 on December 1, 1986.
