The documentation form by Robert Cecil forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Jim Fuller was submitted. Other observers include Chris Pilliod, Jim Sandrock, Cal Knight, Jane Fuller, Charles Fuller, and James Huntington. | Elimination of similar species: The only species I could not eliminate on the basis of field marks observed was Yellow-footed, which according to Tom Kent (telephone conversation) is not a known vagrant. More objectively, the Yellow-footed is supposed to be larger than a Herring Gull. As stated above, this bird was about the size of a Herring Gull, or perhaps a little smaller. I don't feel it was larger than a Herring Gull. Seabirds (Harrison) warns of possible confusion with dark race Herring Gull. I have not heard of this race occuring [sic] in Iowa. In any event, the foot coloring was incorrect for Herring Gull, which has pink legs in contrast to this bird's yellow legs. | The original documentation form event occurred at various times.

The documentation form by Robert Cecil is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Another observer includes Doug Reeves. | Elimination of similar species: First year Herring much more "contrasty"--see above. Kumlien's Iceland Gull...According to Seabirds (Harrison), 1st year Iceland is more pale, tail uniform gray. Overall body coloration is more like 1st year Glaucous--bird I saw was darker than 1st year Glaucous. [...] The important thing about this uniformity that the accompanying first year Herring Gulls had much contrast, showing whitish head, darker wingtips, dark at the tip of the underwings (sometimes), and most obviously, much darker secondaries, creating a dark trailing edge to the wings. Their general color was a darker chocolatey brown. [...] BILL: Pinkish--noticably [sic] smaller that [sic] Herrings. This is pretty subjective, but at about 2/3 of the way across the river at the dam (maybe one third mile) the bill on a Herring can be easily seen through my scope. [...] A very indistinct darkening (wing, upper surface) of the first two or three primaries. The mark had to be looked for to be seen--on the Herring it was much more evident. [...] At some times, the bird showed secondaries that were slightly darker than the rest of the wing. Slightly should be emphasized--at no time was it even close to the darkness of the secondaries of the first year Herring. [...] There was a very slight and indistinct darkening to the first two or three primaries, but this had to be looked for carefully. I have also seen a number of 1st year Herring Gulls that fit this description, but all have a distinct window at base of primaries. | The original documentation form event occurred at various times during the date range of sightings on the documentation form.

The Thayer's were obviously a lighter shade of brown than any Herrings present. I judged these birds to be somewhat smaller than any Herring. I could not totally rule out first year Glaucous-winged. According to NGS, Glaucous-wing has less mottling or scalloping. The Keokuk birds were obviously mottled. | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:05:00/11:30:00.

The documentation form by Robert K. Myers forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Maridel Jackson was submitted. Other observers include Walt Jackson, Eugene Armstrong, and Eloise Armstrong. | Elimination of similar species: [...] I first noticed this bird as we were scanning a bunch of dunlin and this bird "stuck out." [...] The bird was about the size of a lesser yellowlegs (also present) but was of different proportions. The body was too heavy (chunky) for a yellowlegs - being more dowitcher like. The neck was fairly long - more so than a dowticher but maybe a little shorter than lesser yellowlegs. The head was defnitely small for the size of the bird. The legs were also fairly long (knobby knees) and again probably a little shorter than a lesser yellowlegs. These basic proportions helped at once to eliminate many species. [..] The bird's head and upper neck were very tawny (similar to buff breasted sandpiper) [...] Tail - This is the one feature along with the basic shape that convinced me. [...] If the bird would have had no color at all I still would have called it a ruff from the proportions. Ruff plumage is variable to say the least. | The original documentation form event lasted from approximately 15:00:00/15:45:00.

Kent, and Bery Engebretsen were submitted. Other observers include Dennis Thompson, Eloise Armstrong, Eugene Armstrong, Tom Staudt, and many unidentified observers. | Elimination of similar species: Pomarine Jaeger and Long-tailed Jaeger are possible. See explanation on back as to why I believe this was Parasitic Jaeger. [...] A juvenile dark phase Pomarine would also show much white in the base of primaries (top and bottom) and the tail wouldn't have any long streamers. The Pomarine should however be a larger bird (Herring Gull size). The Pomarine's flight should be slower and more labored than this bird was. A juvenile dark phase Long-tailed Jaeger would not show as much white on dorsal side of primaries as this bird did and the flight pattern should be almost tern-like which it was not. Long-tailed Jaegers should also appear to be more grayish than the bird in question- even in dark phase. Further note on size-- As the jaeger rested on the water, double-crested cormorants would sometimes swim into the field of view and they appeared to be at least one-third larger than the jaeger. A pied-billed grebe also swam near once and the jaeger was probably 1/4 again longer than the grebe. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:15:00/09:40:00 and seen several times after that for a total of sixty minutes.

The documentation form by Robert Myers is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Francis L. Moore was submitted later. | Elimination of similar species: Fall scarlet tanager is possible - see attached page. My first thought was that this was late for a scarlet Tanager and when I looked closer I saw the wing bars. My second thought was that someone told me that one of a hunderd [sic] ♀ scarlets have wing bars. I also knew the Peterson Guide says some scarlets have two wing bars. When I went home that night I was anything but convinced the bird was a western tanager even though most literature states wing bars = western tanager. When I got home I phoned Fancis Moore and he went to the park and was able to relocate the bird. Even though he had never seen western tanagers before, Francis thought this was one. His enthusiasm prompted me to research further. I am now also convinced that this bird was indeed a western tanager no matter how unlikely it seems. Ironically, my first western tanager, a male seen April 26, 1980 at Forney Lake, was also with a mixed flock of yellow-rump + palm warblers. | The original documentation form event lasted from 16:00:00/16:15:00.
