I was struck by the neat appearance and greater activity of these particular birds and by the fact that they were not associating with the flock of house sparrows near the bird feeders. Oftentimes all three birds were on the feeder concurrently which allowed for a number of comparisons. Characteristics which differentiated this bird from the Common Redpolls and identified it as a Hoary Redpoll: underlying color was lighter than the warmer, darker brown of the Commons, More extensive white feather edgings to the secondaries, tertials, and scapulars than shown on Commons, Broad white edge to the greater coverts, Buffy face and strong white supercilliary, Smaller red cap, Broken and shorter flank streaking, Short, triangular bill with resulting pushed in face, Nearly white undertail covers (Although brightly colored adult male Common Redpolls may have diminished markings on their undertail coverts, this bird had no red except for the cap.) | The original documentation form event lasted from 07:30:00 and periodically throughout the day. one that forms the basis of this record. [...] At Wild Cat Den State Park in a small area of bottom land of deciduous woods on May 12, 1988 at 7:20 AM, for aproximatly [sic] 45 seconds.

The most striking features being the head and throat markings. [...] I then checked the rest of the birds listed and made the summation that I had seen the Townsend's. That evening when I returned from work I checked my Golden, Peterson, N.G.S. and Audubon Master Guide for their accounts of the Townsend's and similar species. I eliminated the following; Hermit Warbler - no cheek patch: Blackburnian - dosn't [sic] have a black throat: Black-throated Green - has solid back color and cheek patch not as bold, no black cap. Of the references mentioned, the N.G.S. has the most accurate illustration of the birds head but I can't verify that the bird I saw did or didn't have yellow under the eye. | The original documentation form event lasted from approximately 07:20:00/07:20:45.

The documentation form by Lilian Serbousek is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: [..] -seen with Water Pipits, Vesper Sparrow and Golden Plover and Horned Larks - looked quite similar to Vesper Sparrow-white outer tail feathers, buffy above and streaked, white below with streaks on breasts & sides (couldn't see bill well at this distance) [...] close enough to see bill was long and slender (like Vesper's pushed down and forward) also was pinkish and dark at tip (lower mandible was lightest) was sure it wasn't a Water Pipit because of streaked back, breast coloration and leg coloration - bird walked and ran, Savannah and Vesper Sparrow that were also on the ground hopped, flight was undulating and was more graceful compared to low buzzy flights of the two sparrows, the wings appeared pointed and long (as a whole the bird looked more slender) not as vocal as the Water Pipits, notes were higher and thinner (1 syllable instead of two) then Water Pipits

[...] I took notice that the bird in hand lacked the definite eye stripe characteristic of the Bewick's, Carolina, and Marsh wrens. Petersen, Mary Lou Petersen, Margaret Brooke, Lillian Serbousek, Allen Mueller, and many unidentified observers. | Elimination of similar species: [...] According to plumage descriptions of the Pigmy and Brown-headed Nuthatches, the only noticeable difference between the two (short of having the bird in hand) is in the color of the crown and nape. The field guides are agreed that the crown of the Brown-headed is brown, but there is a lack of unanimity in their descriptions of the crown of the Pigmy. [...] Margaret Brooke, in writing up the observation for IBL, describes the cap as being "brownish" but has no doubt about this nuthatch being a Pigmy. [...] At this point, I thought it could be a Scarlet Tanager. [...] As I watched it, the bird was taking off from the grass, flying into the air to snatch an insect, then landing on a nearby fence.
