Sanderling larger with proportionately shorter bill, always shows dark bend of wing in basic plumage. I have seen rather rufous appearing Semipalmated Sandpipers, but they looked much more uniform on the upper parts than this bird did. The behavior is a bit supportive. Based on records for Iowa, we do not yet know which species is more likely.
