Kent and Carl J. Bendorf, and published in Iowa bird life, 54, 1984. The best new bird seen in the state was Barrow's Goldeneye, first sighted at Forneys Lake. Other notable accidental bird species seen were a Red-throated Loon at Cedar Lake, a Eurasian Wigeon at Sweet Marsh, and a Rock Wren in Woodbury County. Gray color + sharply contrasting face pattern would be very unusual in a buteo. Prairie Falcon would have dark in axillar area. I could easily have seen this dark pattern if the bird had had it, but it did not. Face pattern is also wrong for Prairie Falcon - too solid + too black-and-white.
