The documentation form by Randy Pinkston is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Stephen J. Dinsmore was submitted later. Another observer includes Susan Grove. | Elimination of similar species: I am uncomfortable committing to California Gull given the brief and distant view I had, and my limited past experience with the species. My fear is that this was just a small Herring Gull. Herring can be quite variable in overall size, bill size, and in terms of color and shade of the first-winter plumage. Supposedly 10-15% of first-winter Herrings' can have a "dipped-in-ink" bill in the fall (Harrison 1983 or Grant 1986?). | The original documentation form event lasted from 12:30:00/15:30:00.

Other observers include Jerry Toll and B.J. Rose. | Elimination of similar species: Both Ring-billed and Herring Gulls are eliminated by bill coloration, size, slightly darker mantle, and eye color. Western, Lesser-black backed would be darker mantled, different bill coloration. | The original documentation form event lasted from 10:30:00/10:58:00.

The documentation form by Thomas H. Kent is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Jim Fuller, Randy Pinkston, Carol Thompson, and Carl J. Bendorf were submitted later. Other observers include Timothy Dwyer, John Cordell, James Huntington, Cal Knight, Bernie Knight, and Rick Hollis. | Elimination of similar species: First-year Ring-billed Gulls were all in first winter plumage with gray mantle and were much lighter overall. The only other species considered is juvenile Herring Gull. The size is small for Herring Gull. The elongated appearance and short legs fit California Gull. Most young Herrings that I see in early fall have mostly dark bills that are larger than that of this bird. The double inner wing bar and lighter tertial tips fit California Gull. The overall relatively uniform and relatively light brown color without windows in the inner primaries also made this bird look different from Herring Gull. | The original documentation form event lasted from 15:15:00/16:55:00 on October 27, 1990 and from 19:10:00/22:30:00 and 15:00:00/16:00:00 on October 28, 1990.

The article by Stephen J. Dinsmore forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: [...]The bird was similar in size to the largest Ring-billed Gulls, but slightly larger than others. I approached closer and noted that, when compared to a Ring-billed Gull, the bird had duller yellow legs, a stouter bill with black and red spots near the tip of the lower mandible, and a darker gray mantle. [...] The bird was slightly larger than most of the Ring-billed Gulls, although one or two of the biggest Ring-billed Gulls were as large as the bird I was studying. Proportionately, the bird was heavier and larger-headed than a Ring-billed Gull. [...] I estimated the mantle color to be about midway between those of Ring-billed Gull and a Lesser Black-backed Gull. [...] The bill was heavier than the bill of a Ring-billed Gull and had a distinct gonys. The legs were pale gray-green, unlike the bright yellow legs of a Ring-billed Gull. Leg length appeared similar to a Ring-billed Gull. | The original documentation form event lasted from 07:45:00/09:27:00.

Loess Hills / Missouri River Valley. The bird was coming from out of the valley. It crossed the wooded ridges of HNA and headed southeast.
|
The documentation form by Mark Orsag is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: I considered 5 other species of raptor in total. I eliminated two possibilities (Rough-legged Hawk and Northern Harrier) within seconds of seeing the bird in question. I eliminated two others (Bald Eagle [imm.], and Red-tailed Hawk more or less during the minute or so that I had the bird in view. **** ** I reviewed, in my head, the fine points of the Krider's Red-tailed Hawk for a few seconds after the bird had disappeared from view. The fifth species came to mind just before I started writing this report (the next day). I retroactively eliminated it. In reconstructing my reasoning, I believe: Rough-leg was eliminated due to the unmarked white throat, breast, underwings, and underside. Northern Harrier was eliminated due [sic] the large size and robust shape of the bird, the flight pattern (especially wingbeat), the unstreaked white throat, etc. Immature Swainson's Hawk later eliminated by dark head, white wing patches on primaries, lack of dark flight feathers on underwing, unlikelihood of December sighting. Bald Eagle immature- (whitebelly I-II) was eliminated by the downpushing wingbeat, the colors of the bird's dorsal surface, the lack of a contrast on the dorsal surface between the brown-gray forward part of the wing and the darker flight feathers (a little known good fieldmark for Immature BE), and the confining of the white coloration to the primaries, etc. Red-tailed Hawk-This species, in light of its similar (but smaller) size and variable plumages, posed the greatest problems. The dark upper surface, dark head, pointed wings, and pattern of flight (dihedral in glide posture), as well as the distinct and identical nature of the white markings on the upperwings and the lack of patagial marks, "commas", or other dark markings on the underside, were considered in total and used to rule out the immature light-morph Red-tail and, on reflection, a partial albino Red-tail. Krider's Red-tailed Hawk was the toughest to rule out. Here are my reasons: 1. Krider's heads appear white/light in contrast to the darker (gray or brown) color of the back. This bird's head was not lighter in color (on top) than the back. Back coloring was too dark (brown-reddish) for Krider's-no white mottling seen. Wings were pointed not rounded. No 'headlight' fieldmark [sic] was seen and the 'points of light' fieldmark [sic] was. Dihedral in glide unusual but not impossible for a Red-tail, but the wingbeat (fluid and downpushing rather than centered on the downstroke at the wrist) did not look like a Red-tailed's. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:00:00/09:01:00.

The documentation form by Steve Dinsmore is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Hank Zaletal, Jim Dinsmore, Mark Proescholdt, and Paul Martsching were submitted later. Other observers include Joe Schaufenbuel. | Elimination of similar species: peeps sp. because of smaller size, lack of gray scaly back, lack of white stripe above eye and lack of black wing tips with white wing stripe. Sanderling was eliminated by smaller size, unscaly back, larger amount of black on wings and lack of necklace on breast. Eliminated from other shore birds by combination of chunky short legged appearance, white wing stripe, necklace on breast and grayish, scaly appearance. | The original documentation form event lasted from 13:00:00/18:30:00.

The documentation form with an attachment by Michael Newlon is the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Thomas H. Kent and two documentation forms for two separate sightings by Carl Bendorf. | Elimination of similar species: Build, pale wings + color pattern, feather pattern on back/coverts distinctive. [...] No other calidrine sandpiper likely to be found in Iowa combines the coloration, size, and proportions of the Knot. The only species that combine the overall grey coloration and the heavy straight bill are Sanderling, much smaller, and Willet, much larger and longer-legged, with blue-grey rather than black bill and legs. The other shorebirds that are remotely similar are the Tattlers, which have more slender bills and paler legs; basic-plumaged Surfbird, which has a shorter, thicker bill, yellow at base, pale legs, and less-distinct face-pattern (but similar pattern on coverts/ scapulars/tertials); Great knot, which is supposed to lack a distinct supercilium, have round black spots on chest and flanks, black upperparts, a longer, more slender bill. .
