A radio script written by George O. Hendrickson for the Junior Academy of Science Radio Program and presented on WOI and WSUI explaining the usefulness of birds. Hendrickson describes how birds are very helpful in controlling destructive insects and harmful weeds. Also included are details on how certain birds are beneficial in acting as scavengers to destroy garbage and dead animal carcasses as well as assisting in the elimination of rodent pests. Hendrickson also mentions other values of birds are the use of birds as game and for food. Additionally, one more benefit of birds is the act of bird watching and the enjoyable study and observation of a variety of species in the state.

A statement from Lotus Miller on behalf of the Ames Audubon Society in preparation for a public hearing on September 26, 1973, regarding the potential flooding of Ledges State Park due to the Saylorville Reservoir and dam project. The members of the society are concerned the flooding of the lower valley at Ledges State Park would destroy the habitat of the birds inhabiting the park, many of them rare species found nowhere else in Iowa. The members believe the best alternative to prevent the drastic change to the habitat and appearance of the lower canyon is a channel change barrier dam.

The body was definitely gray not yellowish. When I saw it closer and in better light, I noticed the rust on the head and rump. This eliminated the Evening Grossbeak. [sic] The bird had no crest or prominent eye markings as do the Waxwings. The under tail coverts were gray. The waxwings are rusty. The White-winged Crossbill is lots smaller and has red on the breast and throat. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:50:00/10:05:00.
