The bird was in a big river pool situation with hundreds of other divers mostly comprising of Redheads, Scaup, Buffleheads, and Goldeneyes. This particular area offers large extensive flats adjacent to both sides of the channel.
|
The documentation form by Brian Blevins is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Another observer was Corey Blevins. | Elimination of similar species: About the only thing that is close is the Bufflehead and they were feeding with this bird, thus contrasting them was easy. The head difference was unmistakable with the buffs having an all dark head with a white spot, where as the smew had a white head with a black patch. | The original documentation form event lasted from 15:13:00/15:36:00.

The documentation form by Larry Stone is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: The distinctive bird had rusty-bronze plumage on its back, tail and head. (The contrast with the emerald-green ruby-throats that had been using the feeder was obvious.) The gorget was bright, and more orange than on ruby-throats. The rufous also seemed plumper than a ruby-throat. | The original documentation form event occurred around 12:00:00.

The documentation form by Larry Stone is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Tom Kent, Jim Dinsmore, and Francis Moore. | Elimination of similar species: We did not see any ruby-throats for a comparison while the rufous was present. But when we saw a female or immature ruby-throat later in the day, we remarked that it looked smaller, slimmer and greener than the rufous. Bradley, A. Martin, Ann Barber and Jim Durbin. | Elimination of similar species: I would identify this bird as a member of the Selasphorus complex. Because of the rufous on the back just above the wing it is most likely a Rufous or Allen's, and of those two, Rufous would be more likely from its range. | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:00:00/11:02:00 on November 4, 10:45:00/11:45:00 on November 5, and 12:05:00/12:10:00 on November 9.

The documentation form by James Fuller is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Thomas Kent was submitted later. Other observers include Allen Martin, and Jane Fuller. | Elimination of similar species: Anna's Hummingbird has gray (not white) underparts. Kaufman's 'Advanced Birding' suggests that female and immature male Ruby-throated and Black-chinned cannot be identified except in the hand. This bird may have been molting into first alternate plumage, because of the red circular area on the throat. It would seem that an area such as this would be red in a Ruby-throat and purple in Black-chinned. | The original documentation form event lasted from 07:55:00/08:45:00.

The documentation form by Dave Carlisle is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: [...] In my attempts to identify the birds, my first observations led me to believe they both were wrens; however, they were larger than the common house wren and lacked the definite light eye ring. [...] I took notice that the bird in hand lacked the definite eye stripe characteristic of the Bewick's, Carolina, and Marsh wrens. There were no white stripes on the back as in the Marsh Wren and it did not have the white outer tail feathers characteristic of Bewick's Wren. | The original documentation form event occurred lasted from approximately 07:50:00/08:00:00.
