Other observers include Kay Niyo, Curt Nelson, Jan Walter, Chris Wood, and Jim Sandrock. | Elimination of similar species: [...] We saw this gull twice in our viewing time and debated if it was an adult Kumlien's Iceland Gull or an adult Thayer's Gull. It was an adult Kumlien's Iceland Gull because a Thayer's Gull has much more blackish coloration at the primary tips and more dark coloration at the primary tips than the Kumlien's which has grayish markings on the primary tips and less dark-colored markings at the primary tips overall. Also, a Kumlien's Iceland Gull shows the almost white wing tips like we saw with a little grayish markings on some primary tips. | The original documentation form event lasted from approximately 15:00:00/16:15:00.

The documentation by Peter Ernzen is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: [...] I initially thought that the bird was a Mourning Warbler - common at Moorehead Park at this time of the year in this type of habitat. [...] I observed a broken eye ring on both sides of the head of this bird. The broken eye ring could best be described as " two bold white crescents" - above and below the eye. The other feature which stuck in my mind was the relatively long looking - "longer looking than Mourning" - tail on this particular bird. At first I tried to dismiss this bird as a nontypical Mourning Warbler. I have seen on several occasions Mourning warblers with slight eye rings - making identification of fall Connecticut and irregular Mourning warblers somewhat difficult. For the next week I returned to the spot hoping for a glimpse of the bird. This proved useless. I had hoped to see this bird as my notes were rather sketchy and incomplete. Consisting primarily of "bird with 2 bold white crescents" around the eyes, and "appeared longer tailed than Mourning". Otherwise the bird looked very similar to a fall male mourning warlber [sic]. | The original documentation form event occurred in the afternoon and lasted around 10 seconds.

Allen, Pam
Snowy Plover
Black Hawk Lake
Sac County, in a dredge pond just east of the most easterly edge of Black Hawk Lake.
The bird was observed feeding quite near the edge of water and near shore area of the dredge pond which was mostly gumbo-like mudflats with some grassy patches.
The documentation form by Pam Allen is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Peter Ernzen was submitted later. Other observers include Reid Allen, Rob Thelen, and Joe Clark. | Elimination of similar species: See above description. [...] It was about one-third the size of a Kildeer, with a short, thin pointed black bill (longer, however, than a Piping Plover's stubbier short bill). [...] Also conspicuous was the black patch which was located just at the top of the 'shoulder' where the wing joined the body and extending a little ways toward the mid-breast area (but nowhere extending as far as the complete or semi-complete breastband common on the Piping Plover). The legs and feet were a dull dark slate grey (with no hint of the orange/pink coloration indicative of a Piping Plover). | The original documentation form event lasted from 13:10:00/13:20:00 and 14:00:00/14:15:00.
