I had my glasses on him long enough to check that there was not a distinct eye ring and that the splotches on his breast were distinct and separate--not blurry--and fairly bold. [...] There was no question in my mind but that he was a thrush, but I thought this bird more brown on his back than I remembered Gray-cheeked to be. The Eastern and Western Bluebirds both have rust markings on their breast and neck. The Eastern Bluebird has a more stocky shape than the Mountain Bluebird. I had a chance to compare as I had just seen a flock of Easterns about 5 min. before. The immature Eastern has a soeckled breast, this bird had none. In approximately the center of Harry Kuhl's farm, located at the east end of Sioux Center, Sioux Co., Iowa. The specific area in which we found the bird consists of wet bottomlands with creek and tall willows and many broken branches, snags, and stumps. The bird used snags and branches near and over the creek as perch. The lighting, provided by partly cloudy skies which gradually clouded over completely as the afternoon wore on, was excellent, as the sun was largely behind us. We observed the bird from distances varying between 20 feet and 60 yards.

If there is any bird with which it might possibly be confused -- perhaps at great distance -- it would be a Scarlet Tanager. Staudt was submitted. | Elimination of similar species: The obvious possibilities are both Common or Forsters' Terns. At the very most, this bird was perhaps half the size of the gulls. This would put the body length in the general range of 8" long with a wingspread of 24" (according to size of Ring bills in the Natl. Geo. Guide) The Natl. Geo. Guide gives the general size range of Least Tern as 9" long with a wingspread of 20 ". The sizes of the other terns are given as Common L 14 1/2', W 30", and Forsters' L 14 1/2, W=31". Thus on size alone, Least Tern seems to be the only reasonable choice. The short but deeply forked tail also indicates Least Tern. Harrison's SEABIRDS says, on page 182, "Size and hurried flight,..., usually sufficient to clinch identification in northern hemisphere". The flight of this bird was much quicker and fluttery compared to my experience with the slower, deeper, and more deliberate flight of Common and Forster's Terns. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:30:00/09:32:00.

Leg color. The gulls legs and feet were entirely black. Bonaparte's gull have reddish legs. This was apparent at great distance on the immature Bonaparte's gulls present. 2. Primary feathers. The gull had black outer primaries and gray inner primaries. Immature Bonaparte's having some obvious white inner primaries.) 3. Behavior. I saw one Franklin's this spring with a very narrow white band in the primaries. If this isn't a Laughing Gull, it's an aberrant Franklin's. It seemed to be in a very neat breeding plumage, not a young bird. | The original documentation form event occurred in the afternoon for around two minutes.

Kent and two documentation forms for two separate sightings by Carl Bendorf. | Elimination of similar species: Build, pale wings + color pattern, feather pattern on back/coverts distinctive. [...] No other calidrine sandpiper likely to be found in Iowa combines the coloration, size, and proportions of the Knot. The only species that combine the overall grey coloration and the heavy straight bill are Sanderling, much smaller, and Willet, much larger and longer-legged, with blue-grey rather than black bill and legs. The other shorebirds that are remotely similar are the Tattlers, which have more slender bills and paler legs; basic-plumaged Surfbird, which has a shorter, thicker bill, yellow at base, pale legs, and less-distinct face-pattern (but similar pattern on coverts/ scapulars/tertials); Great knot, which is supposed to lack a distinct supercilium, have round black spots on chest and flanks, black upperparts, a longer, more slender bill. .
