Deciduous trees near farmstead.
The documentation form by Loren J. Padelford is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Ross Silcock was submitted later. Another observer was Jerry Toll. | Elimination of similar species: The only other species similar in appearances the boat-tailed grackle. I was not close enough to observe eye color but the length of the tail in relation to body length rules out that species. The great-tailed grackle has been expanding its range into southern Iowa and Nebraska in recent years with documented nesting success in both states. | The original documentation form event lasted from 08:00:00/08:00:30.

On small, thin peninsula jutting into river, covered with low marsh grass interspersed and supported by taller weeds. Some short willow saplings. Some thin ice bordering shore.
The documentation form by Robert I. Cecil is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: I feel that combination of posture, incl. cock of tail, clear yellow throat and yellowish undersides, and most importantly, trace of emerging mask ruled out all other Warblers. Mask, although faint, was clearly noticable. [sic] Was not Kentucky warbler--saw several this summer and early fall. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:00:00/09:00:10.

The documentation form by Dennis Thompson forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Francis L. Moore, Beth Proescholdt, and Mark Proescholdt were submitted. Other observers include Eugene Armstrong, Eloise Armstrong, Margaret Brooke, Pauline Mooney, and Richard Mooney. | Elimination of similar species: Similar in shape + actions to Bonaparte's. No direct comparison was available, but seemed larger, I'd say half-way in size between Bonaparte's + Ring-billed. Black legs, black half-collar, and lack of carpal bar helped eliminate Bonapartes. The documentation form by Carl J. Bendorf is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Robert K. Myers, Francis L. Moore, and Gerald White were submitted later. Other observers include Peter C. Petersen and Jim Fuller. | Elimination of similar species: Surf Scoter is another all dark bird, but it would have a much larger bill that extends on the same angle as a flattened forehead. The definite gray cheek and throat are not present on Surf Scoter. Female Ruddy ducks should be much browner and again have a flattened forehead in line with a larger bill. Black wings eliminate White-winged Scoter. | The original documentation form event lasted from 10:15:00/10:35:00.

The documentation form with an attachment by Michael Newlon is the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Thomas H. Kent and two documentation forms for two separate sightings by Carl Bendorf. | Elimination of similar species: Build, pale wings + color pattern, feather pattern on back/coverts distinctive. [...] No other calidrine sandpiper likely to be found in Iowa combines the coloration, size, and proportions of the Knot. The only species that combine the overall grey coloration and the heavy straight bill are Sanderling, much smaller, and Willet, much larger and longer-legged, with blue-grey rather than black bill and legs. The other shorebirds that are remotely similar are the Tattlers, which have more slender bills and paler legs; basic-plumaged Surfbird, which has a shorter, thicker bill, yellow at base, pale legs, and less-distinct face-pattern (but similar pattern on coverts/ scapulars/tertials); Great knot, which is supposed to lack a distinct supercilium, have round black spots on chest and flanks, black upperparts, a longer, more slender bill. .

Sanderling was eliminated by smaller size, unscaly back, larger amount of black on wings and lack of necklace on breast. Eliminated from other shore birds by combination of chunky short legged appearance, white wing stripe, necklace on breast and grayish, scaly appearance. | The original documentation form event lasted from 13:00:00/18:30:00.

State owned marsh of about 700 Acres.
The documentation form by Carl J. Bendorf forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Thomas J. Staudt was submitted. | Elimination of similar species: The obvious possibilities are both Common or Forsters' Terns. At the very most, this bird was perhaps half the size of the gulls. This would put the body length in the general range of 8" long with a wingspread of 24" (according to size of Ring bills in the Natl. Geo. Guide) The Natl. Geo. Guide gives the general size range of Least Tern as 9" long with a wingspread of 20 ". The sizes of the other terns are given as Common L 14 1/2', W 30", and Forsters' L 14 1/2, W=31". Thus on size alone, Least Tern seems to be the only reasonable choice. The short but deeply forked tail also indicates Least Tern. Harrison's SEABIRDS says, on page 182, "Size and hurried flight,..., usually sufficient to clinch identification in northern hemisphere". The flight of this bird was much quicker and fluttery compared to my experience with the slower, deeper, and more deliberate flight of Common and Forster's Terns. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:30:00/09:32:00.
