The field guides are agreed that the crown of the Brown-headed is brown, but there is a lack of unanimity in their descriptions of the crown of the Pigmy. [...] Margaret Brooke, in writing up the observation for IBL, describes the cap as being "brownish" but has no doubt about this nuthatch being a Pigmy. Serbousek, Lillian	Sprague's Pipit	Delhi	[...] 7 miles N.E. of Ryan - 5 miles S.W. of Delhi on plowed corn field adjacent to hayfields and pasture		The documentation form by Lilian Serbousek is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. \| Elimination of similar species: [..] -seen with Water Pipits, Vesper Sparrow and Golden Plover and Horned Larks - looked quite similar to Vesper Sparrow-white outer tail feathers, buffy above and streaked, white below with streaks on breasts & sides (couldn't see bill well at this distance) [...] close enough to see bill was long and slender (like Vesper's pushed down and forward) also was pinkish and dark at tip (lower mandible was lightest) was sure it wasn't a Water Pipit because of streaked back, breast coloration and leg coloration - bird walked and ran, Savannah and Vesper Sparrow that were also on the ground hopped, flight was undulating and was more graceful compared to low buzzy flights of the two sparrows, the wings appeared pointed and long (as a whole the bird looked more slender) not as vocal as the Water Pipits, notes were higher and thinner (1 syllable instead of two) then Water Pipits	Iowa Ornithologists' Union \| MS 166	13	13

Apparently they prefered shallow water openings in the cattails. Sweet Marsh has a variety of habitats including open water, grassy marsh and cattail marsh. Three-toed Woodpecker	Boyden	2 1/2 miles North of Boyden Iowa on east side of county highway L14	General: 3000 m farm grove in wide open (formerly prairie) gently rolling farm land. Specific: grove is a thick growth of shrubs, weedy plants, Ash trees, and American + Chinese Elms. many of the Elms are dead and fallen. There are 2 rows (closely spaced) of Ponderosa Pine on the North side of the grove. The grove is surrounded with mature honeysuckle shrubs. Ground covered with 0.5 m. of snow in the grove. Van Dyk, John, 1936-	Mountain Bluebird	Garfield Township	Along dirt road through dry hilly fields bordering the Big Sioux River in extreme western Sioux Co., appoximately 1 1/2 miles south-east of Hudson, S.D., and approximately 2 1/2 miles north of junction of Big Sioux and Rock Rivers.	Area of open dry rolling hills between Big Sioux and Rock Rivers.	The documentation form by John Van Dyk is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Another observer was Mike Van Dyk. \| Elimination of similar species: The blue of Eastern and Western Bluebird is much deeper than of this bird. Both these species show reddish or rusty on breast, and both exhibit a distinctive hunched position. There is no possibility of confusion with Blue Grosbeak (which occurs in our area in summer): its large conical beak and blue underparts exclude it.
