The documentation form by Jim Fuller is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: [...] In the middle of the group was a gull that was darker than any of the other birds, even the immature Herring Gulls. [...] In general size, this bird appeared almost twice the size of the Ring-billed Gulls, and considerably larger than the Herring Gulls, maybe 25%. It also had a massive bill compared to either of those species. [...] The legs were a dull gray-pink, and they were noticeably thicker than those of the Herring or Ring-billed Gulls. | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:05:00/11:35:00.

Other observers include Doris Sandvick, Carol Rogers, Tim Dwyer, Al Hahn, Cal Knight, Ann Barker, Betty Hunt, Kelly McKay, Lewis Blevins, Brian Blevins, Corey Blevins, and other unidentified observers. | Elimination of similar species: [...] It was standing with approx eight Herring gulls. "It really stood out." [...] 1. Using Robbins + Peterson books confirming Herring. Great Black-Backed and Lesser Black Gull we eliminated by size to 24"-26". 2. His overall appearance including bill, head and body seemed much larger and fuller than the Herring gulls. | The original documentation form event lasted from 15:35:00/16:05:00 on December 21, 1986 and 10:00:00/11:00:00 on December 23, 1986.

The documentation form by Jim Bangma is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Ann Johnson was submitted later. | Elimination of similar species: Double-crested is smaller, with a much thinner neck. There is a noticeable transition from the thin neck to the larger head. In this bird, there was no noticeable widening from the neck to the head. Additionally, Double-crested has a proportionally much smaller and weaker bill. Double-crested's forehead slopes more evenly into the bill. While these differences may be difficult to see in single birds without comparative experience, in direct comparison they are significant. Additionally, the orange facial skin combines with the gular pouch to accentuate the overall orange color of the face. Other extralimital black cormorants can be ruled out on size alone, additionally, most have thinner necks and smaller bills than even Double-crested. | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:00:00/11:02:00.

Upon returning home, however, we found in Bent, "The note of the Smooth-billed ani has been called a wailing or whining whistle - resembling the notes of the wood duck." Our bird's call note was not a whistle at all. And then we found in Pough's Eastern Land Birds under Smooth-billed ani, "The two anis are hard to tell apart except by note, the whining notes of this species being in sharp contrast to the soft double note of the Groove-billed." So for my part, that settled it that our bird was a Groove-billed ani. | The original documentation form event occurred in the afternoon

The documentation form by Tim Schantz is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Maridel Jackson, Ross Silcock, Jane R. Clark, and Jim Sinclair were submitted later. Other observers include John Cecil, Eugene Armstrong, and Eloise Armstrong. | Elimination of similar species: Northern Goshawk- Although Goshawks have been known to show pointed wings, they are never as pointed as a Falcon's. I have seen many Northern Goshawks and jizz alone would rule this one out. I saw no barring on the tail. One of the prime field marks on a Goshawk are the bright white undertail coverts which this bird did not have. The bird in question also lacked a dark crown. Peregrine Falcon- Size. No dark helmet. Jizz (mentioned above). The bird lacked overall contrast of a Peregrine Falcon. Juveniles would be brown. Prairie Falcon- Color. Prairies are a brown bird in all plumages. The underwing was uniform with no black axillaries. Habitat. Prairies feed almost exclusively on small mammals. | The original documentation form event occurred around 15:30:00.

The documentation form by Matthew Kenne is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: The lack of facial pattern and white throat and chest rule out peregrine, as the bird was flying almost directly into the sun (perpendicular to me). It wasn't as pale or brown as a prairie, and with shadow and distance there wasn't any dark/light pattern to the underwing. It wasn't black as a crow + the shape was wrong. Eagles were patterned and obviously larger. | The original documentation form event occurred around 13:10:00.

The documentation form by Jeanne C. Edwards is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: Common Redpoll is similar. But just by looking at the two side by side, the difference overall was very apparent. Looked as tho dusted in white powder, much more white area (e.g. rump + breast + undertail). Not as much streaking. Smaller red cap. | The original documentation form event began around 15:30:00.
