Winter males are differentiated from McCowns and Lapland longspurs by the more extensive black mottling on the crown, chest and upper belly, and the tail pattern. Females were distinguished by the tail pattern. Try as I would, I could not stretch the black tail triangle into an inverted black T pattern!! [...] I observed a broken eye ring on both sides of the head of this bird. The broken eye ring could best be described as " two bold white crescents" - above and below the eye. The other feature which stuck in my mind was the relatively long looking - "longer looking than Mourning" - tail on this particular bird. At first I tried to dismiss this bird as a nontypical Mourning Warbler. I have seen on several occasions Mourning warblers with slight eye rings - making identification of fall Connecticut and irregular Mourning warblers somewhat difficult. For the next week I returned to the spot hoping for a glimpse of the bird. This proved useless. I had hoped to see this bird as my notes were rather sketchy and incomplete. Consisting primarily of "bird with 2 bold white crescents" around the eyes, and "appeared longer tailed than Mourning". Otherwise the bird looked very similar to a fall male mourning warlber [sic]. \| The original documentation form event occurred in the afternoon and lasted around 10 seconds. The most striking features being the head and throat markings. [...] I then checked the rest of the birds listed and made the summation that I had seen the Townsend's. That evening when I returned from work I checked my Golden, Peterson, N.G.S. and Audubon Master Guide for their accounts of the Townsend's and similar species. I eliminated the following; Hermit Warbler - no cheek patch: Blackburnian - dosn't [sic] have a black throat: Black-throated Green - has solid back color and cheek patch not as bold, no black cap. Of the references mentioned, the N.G.S. has the most accurate illustration of the birds head but I can't verify that the bird I saw did or didn't have yellow under the eye. \| The original documentation form event lasted from approximately 07:20:00/07:20:45. Petersen, Mary Lou Petersen, Margaret Brooke, Lillian Serbousek, Allen Mueller, and many unidentified observers. \| Elimination of similar species: [...] According to plumage descriptions of the Pigmy and Brown-headed Nuthatches, the only noticeable difference between the two (short of having the bird in hand) is in the color of the crown and nape. The field guides are agreed that the crown of the Brown-headed is brown, but there is a lack of unanimity in their descriptions of the crown of the Pigmy. [...] Margaret Brooke, in writing up the observation for IBL, describes the cap as being "brownish" but has no doubt about this nuthatch being a Pigmy. Bunnimit, Manit	Common Raven	Lake Manawa State Park	[...] Lake Manawa State Park, near Council Bluffs, IA. [...] was travelling south on the road that follows the west edge of Lake Manawa.	The documentation letter by Manit Bunnimit is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. \| Elimination of similar species: [...] It flew for most of the time by soaring with its wings held very flat, only twice flapping its wings momentarily (shallow wingbeats) and once folding its wings rather tightly and gliding. All of the crows I have seen flap steadily, gliding only occasionally. [...] It could not have been mistaken even for the tails of the occasional American Crows that appear quite rounded. The sheer size of the bird and the wedge-shaped tail were enough to distinguish it from any of the crows, but what about the Chihuahuan Raven? Fortunately, as it flew by, the bird made two brief call notes that were very hoarse (sounding much more like grrrawgk than the gaw of the American Crow), and much deeper than the Chihuahuan Raven that I heard in northern Texas. However, because it has been a few years since I had seen or heard the Chihuahuan, I decided to double check the calls on a tape I had at home.
