The documentation form by Ann Johnson is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: Loon were eliminated because, although the neck was somewhat thick, it was longer than a loon. The head was also a bit flatter and it rode higher in the water, just giving a different posture than a loon. Plumage details did not fit any loon. Western Grebe- Thicker neck, some color on neck and white cheek eliminated this one Pied-billed Grebe - Size, bill shape, and other features wrong. Horned/Eared Grebes - Although it gave much the same appearance as a horned grebe, size and bill eliminated both. | The original documentation form event lasted from 16:34:00/16:42:00.

Smaller bird with thicker neck. Head wasn't pointed or peaked like Western. Bigger than Pied-billed with longer neck, different beak. Shorter-bodied than loon, longer necked, different facial markings. Bigger bird than Horned Grebe. longer lighter color bill (later, after looking at field guide). | The original documentation form event lasted from 07:30:00/07:40:00.

The documentation form by Ann Johnson is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: Loons were eliminated on the basis of thin neck and posture. Cormorants were eliminated because of straight posture, lack of throat patch, and basic plumage configurations. The bird was obviously larger than a Pied-billed Grebe which would, in addition to the yellow bill, eliminate all but Western Grebe. Western Grebe would have looked much larger than the various waterfowl nearby and would not have shown any rust color on the neck. | The original documentation form event lasted from 12:45:00/13:05:00.

Other observers include Bery Engebretsen, Eugene Armstrong, and Eloise Armstrong. | Elimination of similar species: The long, thin neck eliminated ducks and loons and convinced me that the shape of the bird was most certainly a grebe. Western/Clark's shows white rather than gray on the chin, neck, and breast and is larger. Horned Grebes are smaller and also are white on the underparts. Pied-billed could be eliminated by the size and shape of the bill alone. Although fall Eared Grebes are fairly gray, the size equaling Hooded Mergansers and the large bill allowed me to eliminate that species. | The original documentation form event lasted from 16:30:00/16:40:00.
