A ♂ Mourning Warbler lacks the vivid eye crescents. A Connecticut Warbler has a complete white eyering and no black smudge on the upper breast and the gray head is a lighter gray color. In "fall" the female and immature Mourning Warblers may show a thin, nearly complete eyering (which I have seen on Mournings in the fall), but this could not be mistaken for the vivid white eye crescents of this breeding-plumaged male MacGillivray's Warbler along with its very noticeable black smudge on its upper breast below its gray hood. | The original documentation form event lasted from approximately 11:15:00/11:15:05.

Nighthawk - Our bird was much bigger than Nighhawk and had no white patches in its wings. Turkey Vulture or Eagle - Our bird was much smaller and had long, narrow pointed wings. Accipiters - Body shape was wrong and did not have extra long tail -look like accipiters have. Osprey - Wrong body shape for osprey and no white markings on our bird. Buteos - Wrong body shape again even for Swainson's Hawk which can appear to have pointed wings when seen overhead. Buteos have much broader wings and should show some white contrasting colors underneath. Falcons - Our bird was too big for a Kestrel or Merlin. I don't think Merlins ever have leisurely, slow flapping flight. This bird didn't fly right for a Peregrine and the body proportions were not right for a Peregrine. I've seen Peregrines fly in a slow, leisurely manner and this did not seem to suggest a Peregrine at all. A Peregrine or Prairie Falcon should show some light-colored areas underneath. Also, a Peregrine's tail tapers down to a rounded end and is not squared off and flared at the end. | The original documentation form event lasted from 19:35:00/19:35:00.

It was an adult Kumlien's Iceland Gull because a Thayer's Gull has much more blackish coloration at the primary tips and more dark coloration at the primary tips than the Kumlien's which has grayish markings on the primary tips and less dark-colored markings at the primary tips overall. The documentation form by Mark Proescholdt forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Ann Johnson, Jim Fuller, Tanya E. Bray, Barbara L. Wilson, and Randall Pinkston were submitted. Other observers include Ross Silcock, Tim Schantz, Eugene Armstrong, Eloise Armstrong, and many unidentified other observers. | Elimination of similar species: A Franklin's Gull juvenile or first-winter bird has a clear-cut blackish half-hood, a smaller bill, smaller size, and a white forehead. A juvenile Mew gull is much darker, has a thin bill, and light grayish legs. Juvenile Herring and California Gulls are much larger - larger than Ring-Billed Gulls - and lack the bright white at the base of the tail. | The original documentation form event lasted from approximately 09:00:00/09:15:00 and 11:00:00/12:10:00.

The documentation form by Mark Osrag is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Sue Mattix. | Elimination of similar species: Dark immature gulls were eliminated by flight pattern, body-to-wing shape profile (as above), and the well seen identical translucent patches on the wings. Other jaeger species were eliminated by the bird's size. It thermalled above a wetland area beyond HNA's 'Westridge' with a group of Ring-billed Gulls. Size comparison was perfect-revealing a noticeably larger, heavier-bodied bird. | The original documentation form event lasted from 14:45:00/14:55:00.

The documentation form by Mark Orsag is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: I considered 5 other species of raptor in total. I eliminated two possibilities (Rough-legged Hawk and Northern Harrier) within seconds of seeing the bird in question. I eliminated two others (Bald Eagle [imm.], and Red-tailed Hawk more or less during the minute or so that I had the bird in view. **** ** I reviewed, in my head, the fine points of the Krider's Red-tailed Hawk for a few seconds after the bird had disappeared from view. The fifth species came to mind just before I started writing this report (the next day). I retroactively eliminated it. In reconstructing my reasoning, I believe: Rough-leg was eliminated due to the unmarked white throat, breast, underwings, and underside. Northern Harrier was eliminated due [sic] the large size and robust shape of the bird, the flight pattern (especially wingbeat), the unstreaked white throat, etc. Immature Swainson's Hawk later eliminated by dark head, white wing patches on primaries, lack of dark flight feathers on underwing, unlikelihood of December sighting. Bald Eagle immature- (whitebelly I-II) was eliminated by the downpushing wingbeat, the colors of the bird's dorsal surface, the lack of a contrast on the dorsal surface between the brown-gray forward part of the wing and the darker flight feathers (a little known good fieldmark for Immature BE), and the confining of the white coloration to the primaries, etc. Red-tailed Hawk-This species, in light of its similar (but smaller) size and variable plumages, posed the greatest problems. The dark upper surface, dark head, pointed wings, and pattern of flight (dihedral in glide posture), as well as the distinct and identical nature of the white markings on the upperwings and the lack of patagial marks, "commas", or other dark markings on the underside, were considered in total and used to rule out the immature light-morph Red-tail and, on reflection, a partial albino Red-tail. Krider's Red-tailed Hawk was the toughest to rule out. Here are my reasons: 1. Krider's heads appear white/light in contrast to the darker (gray or brown) color of the back. This bird's head was not lighter in color (on top) than the back. Back coloring was too dark (brown-reddish) for Krider's-no white mottling seen. Wings were pointed not rounded. No 'headlight' fieldmark [sic] was seen and the 'points of light' fieldmark [sic] was. Dihedral in glide unusual but not impossible for a Red-tail, but the wingbeat (fluid and downpushing rather than centered on the downstroke at the wrist) did not look like a Red-tailed's. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:00:00/09:01:00.

The documentation form by Mark Brogie and Peter P. Wickham forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Paul Martsching was submitted. Another observer includes Steve Dinsmore. | Elimination of similar species: [...] The bird was in the company of several Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus) and three subadult Glaucous Gulls (Larus hyperboreus). Two of the Glaucous Gulls were light plumaged birds lacking a gray mantle and, since eye color was not noted, may have been either first or early second winter birds. The third Glaucous was quite buffy and was undoubtably [sic] a first winter bird. The Iceland Gull was first observed being chased by a light-phased Glaucous and was distinctly smaller and lighter colored. It also flew with a faster wingbeat and had a more buoyant flight than that of the larger bird. Glaucous Gulls were also observed chasing Herring Gulls but at no time was intraspecific chasing observed. During several instances two Glaucous Gulls were observed resting on the water or sitting on the ice together, but the Iceland always remained isolated from these birds. At one point the Iceland Gull circled overhead at a distance of approximately 40 yards in the company of a light-phased Glaucous and an immature Herring Gull, and characteristics between the species were well noted. The plumage of the Iceland was wholly white with a faint buffy tinge, yet distinctly whiter than the Glaucous Gull. The size difference between the Glaucous and the other two species was apparent as the Iceland and Herring were of approximately equal size. The head and bill of the Iceland Gull appeared less robust in shape than the Glaucous although both species had a bicolored bill with a flesh colored base and dark tip. [...] The brown barring of the undertail coverts of the Iceland appeared heavier and more noticable [sic] than in its white-winged congeneric counterpart, and contrasted particularly with the whitish tail. | The original documentation form event lasted for approximately twenty minutes.
