Other observers include John Daniel. \| Elimination of similar species: It acted differently from the Common Loons. When it dove, it "reared back" its head, as though it were "winding up" for the dive. The Common Loons did not do this. In the Walsh article, this behavior is discussed. On page 26 of his article, Walsh states that "both Pacific and Artic Loons have similar diving motions." I do not believe our bird was a Pacific Loon. I base this judgement on overall body size, bill size, and the distribution of white coloration in the head/neck, waterline, and flank areas. Our bird was essentially similar size-wise to the accompanying Common Loons. The bill was also similar to Common Loon. It was not upturned and this as I would have expected with Red-throated Loon. The pale primaries eliminated all but the white-winged gulls - Glaucous, Iceland, and possibly Thayer's. Glaucous can be eliminated by size and bill color. Thayer's was eliminated because of: 1) overall gray-white appearance; 2) the lack of any secondary bar; and 3) the checkered tertials. Problems with the record are the duskiness on the face and the narrow dark edging to the outer primaries from below. The Iceland Gull was sighted on the ice above the dam feeding on a dead Canada goose. It was very protective of the food source chasing Crows away. Kent is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Jim Fuller was submitted later. Other observers include Pete Wickham, John Daniel, Chuck Fuller, Bill Dawes, and John Rutenbeck. \| Elimination of similar species: At first I thought the bird might be a Glaucous Gull, but the all black bill quickly excluded that possibility. Later I confirmed that the bird was smaller than Herrings and had a bill that was too small and too short for a Glaucous. I believe that the tail band also argues against Glaucous. I next considered Thayer's Gull, but decided that the tail band was not extensive enough, that there was no secondary bar, that the wing tips were too light (both in flight and on the standing bird), and that the tertials were not dark enough on the standing bird. Other observers include Kay Niyo, Curt Nelson, Jan Walter, Chris Wood, and Jim Sandrock. \| Elimination of similar species: [...] We saw this gull twice in our viewing time and debated if it was an adult Kumlien's Iceland Gull or an adult Thayer's Gull. It was an adult Kumlien's Iceland Gull because a Thayer's Gull has much more blackish coloration at the primary tips and more dark coloration at the primary tips than the Kumlien's which has grayish markings on the primary tips and less dark-colored markings at the primary tips overall. Also, a Kumlien's Iceland Gull shows the almost white wing tips like we saw with a little grayish markings on some primary tips. \| The original documentation form event lasted from approximately 15:00:00/16:15:00.
