The documentation form by Jim Fuller forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Thomas H. Kent was submitted. Other observers include Dick Tetrault, Peter Petersen, Ann Barker, Eugene Armstrong, Eloise Armstrong, and Chuck Fuller. | Elimination of similar species: Western gull is the same size as herring gull, as is slaty backed gull and lesser black backed gull is smaller than herring. The very large legs and bill would also speak against lesser black-backed and slaty-backed. | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:05:00/11:40:00 on January 14, 1991 and 07:41:00/07:48:00 and 08:12:00/08:28:00 on January 17, 1991.

The documentation form by Christine A. Quinn is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Another observer was Robert J. Naisbitt. | Elimination of similar species: [...] This cap was quite noticeable & large (much larger than a catbird's cap). The bird seemed to be a little larger than a catbird (I have a pair nesting in my yard to [sic] I seem them a lot) and not as large as a robin. [...] He put me in mind very much of a catbird in size and contours. | The original documentation form event lasted around "evenings and 1 morning" from around May 22 to the first week of June 1990.

The documentation form by Dave Carlisle is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: [...] In my attempts to identify the birds, my first observations led me to believe they both were wrens; however, they were larger than the common house wren and lacked the definite light eye ring. [...] I took notice that the bird in hand lacked the definite eye stripe characteristic of the Bewick's, Carolina, and Marsh wrens. There were no white stripes on the back as in the Marsh Wren and it did not have the white outer tail feathers characteristic of Bewick's Wren. | The original documentation form event occurred lasted from approximately 07:50:00/08:00:00.

The documentation form by Ann Johnson forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Tim Schantz was submitted. Other observers include Roy Godwin and Jim Sinclair. | Elimination of similar species: Body and bill shape and behavior identified this bird as a flycatcher. The size, eye-ring and wing bars eliminated all but Empidonax flycatchers. Because of the late date on this bird, it is difficult to get an understanding of molt sequences which may or may not be helpful. From what I can find on molts, however, the following is based on best available information. | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:40:00/11:55:00 and approximately 13:30:00/14:00:00.

The long, thin bill eliminates Dovekie, Ancient Murrelet, and all of the auklets. The bill shape, dark cap that included the eye, and presence of two white patches on each side eliminates all other murrelets, especially Kittlitz's. | The original documentation form event lasted from 15:15:00/15:24:00.

Slaty-backed Gull - The biggest problem - I felt this bird was not dark mantled enough was too heavily bodied + too much of a domed forehead. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:35:00/09:45:00, 10:35:00/11:00:00, 12:40:00/12:52:00 on January 15, 1991 and 09:25:00/09:35:00 on January 16, 1991.

Winter of 1974-75, Red Rock area and Pleasantville, Iowa field notes were submitted by Gladys Black along with a cover letter to Vernon M. Kleen dated March 19, 1975, a newspaper article and a map. The article was one she wrote for the Des Moines Register called "Reports two Snowy Owls seen in central Iowa," and the map showed the number of Snowy Owl observations in Iowa counties, November 1974-March 1975. The letter summarized the findings on Snowy Owls from responses to the newspaper article, and the impact of a blizzard January 10-11 in northwest Iowa that killed many birds and livestock. This item was used as supporting documentation for the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union Quarterly field report of winter 1974-1975.
