The documentation form by Michael Newlon is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Carol S. Newlon. | Elimination of similar species: proportions, uniformly pale primaries would rule out herring; size/build rules out imm. glaucous. Bill much less heavy than imm. glaucous-winged. Remaining question is whether this bird is (over) a Thayer's Gull or a Kumlien's gull, presently considered separate species but widely suspected of being conspecific. Thayer's is extremely variable, and the limits of its variability are not well known, especially for imm. plumages. [Dwight says of his series of ad. thayeri, 'no two are alike'. It seems probable that there is clinal variation from west to east (thayeri - kumliesi [sic] - nominate glaucoides) and even possible that thayeri interbreeds with argenlatus at the western end of its range.] In addition several plumage descriptions in the literature may be assigned to birds of [illegible] age. Be that as it may: L. glaucoides glaucoides is supposed to have pale warm-brown primaries as a 1-W & paler, nearly whitish areas as a 2-W (though photos in grant's [sic] book show one 2-W with pale-brown primaries concolor with coverts). L. glaucoides kumlieni (in Dwight's plates) is assigned v. pale primaries as a 1-W, with slightly darker outer webs; would look uniform pale grey at any distance. His 2-W has darker primaries, again with slightly darker outer webs [I suspect these assignments should be reversed.] L. thayeri in published description is supposed to have darker primaries still, though not so dark as those of imm. Herring gulls, and lacking contrast with mantle. However some west coast thayeri-type gulls are very pale - though their back color is grey-brown rather than the warmer pale tan of L. glaucoides. (It is possible that these are really kumlieni but little data exists.) It is the similarity of the Cone Marsh Bird to one I photographed in Cal. that convinced me to classify it as thayeri - though kumleni cannot be unequivocally ruled out | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:10:00/12:30:00.

General: border between an extensive tract of riverbottom forest and a half-mile stretch of corn and soybean fields (with large patches of unharvested beans). |
The documentation form by Michael Newlon is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Richard DeCoster. | Elimination of similar species: The three species with which confusion is most likely are the bald eagle (imm) and red-tailed and rough-legged hawks (dark-phase). Several points rule out these species. (1) Size: the body length of the bird was 2&1/2-3 times that of a crow that perched in the same tree; the two hawks are not nearly this large. (2) tail pattern: imm. bald eagles sometimes show tails that are darker at the tip than at the base, but all such individuals that I have seen have had a gradual transition from dark to light, rather than the sharp boundary that this bird showed. Adult melanistic redtails usually have red tails; imm birds should show dark tails crossed by darker bands. (3) Wing pattern: imm bald eagles have white in the wing, but this is usually in the wing-lining rather than the primaries and secondaries; dark-phase rough-legs usually have the primaries and secondaries entirely white. (4) build: bald eagle has longer neck, and more massive head and bill, than golden; this bird had the general proportions of a buteo. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:00:00/09:30:00.

The documentation form by Mike Dooley is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Bill Scheible, John Havilcek, Joyce Havilcek, and Jim Durbin. | Elimination of similar species: None eliminated on-site. Possible mis-identifications, given the premium conditions and extended period under which this bird was studied, might be as follows (consulting the National Geographic Society field guide): (1) fall adult Blackburnian Warbler: bird in question was strongly streaked on breast and sides, not just flanks; (2) female Townsend's Warbler: streaking on breast and sides of bird in question did not have semi-necklace effect of Townsend's; olive of head and back much grayer; (3) female Praire [sic] Warbler: bird in question had extended yellow post-occular stripe; streaked breast, not just sides and streaks bolder; had white belly; (4) fall Blackpoll Warbler: bird in question was much more boldly streaked on breast and sides; had extended post-occular yellow stripe, clearly defined cheek patch. All of above eliminated due to bird in question having wings similar to back color and not of a contrasting charcoal, as well as having a bold yellow-olive rump. All but Praire [sic] Warbler eliminated due to bird in question's virtual lack of wing bars. | The original documentation form event lasted from 13:45:00/15:00:00.
