The documentation form by Jim Fuller forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Randall Pinkston and Thomas H. Kent were submitted. Other observers include Carl Bendorf, Jane Fuller, and many unidentified other observers. | Elimination of similar species: First year Thayer's Gull is overall darker, with darker primaries and a well defined dark tail band. Glaucous Gull is larger, and the first year bird has a two-toned bill. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:35:00/09:45:00 and 12:25:00/12:30:00 on January 16, 1993 and 11:45:00/11:50:00 on January 19, 1993.

The documentation form by Ray Cummins is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Mary Montgomery and Dot Cornett. | Elimination of similar species: Thayer's Gull was eliminated because there was no dark in the primaries, no dark secondary band, and bill was not all dark. A first-winter Glaucous would have the coloration but there is no way this gulls bill or body size was big enough tobe [sic] a Gloucous [sic] Gull. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:45:00/10:30:00.

I excluded Thayer's Gull because both of these birds had very light primaries (not dark webs on the outer primaries). Neither had a secondary bar or in fact any distinctive marking on the wings. The lack of tail band in the first year bird also excludes Thayer's Gull. I was impressed by the paleness of the gray mantle in the second-year bird, but have too little experience with older Thayer's Gulls to make a comparison. | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:30:00/12:30:00.

The documentation form by Thomas H. Kent is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Jim Fuller was submitted later. Other observers include Pete Wickham, John Daniel, Chuck Fuller, Bill Dawes, and John Rutenbeck. | Elimination of similar species: At first I thought the bird might be a Glaucous Gull, but the all black bill quickly excluded that possibility. Later I confirmed that the bird was smaller than Herrings and had a bill that was too small and too short for a Glaucous. I believe that the tail band also argues against Glaucous. I next considered Thayer's Gull, but decided that the tail band was not extensive enough, that there was no secondary bar, that the wing tips were too light (both in flight and on the standing bird), and that the tertials were not dark enough on the standing bird. All of the findings were a good fit for first-winter Iceland Gull. | The original documentation form event lasted from 13:15:00/13:35:00 on December 31, 1991 and 08:55:00/10:20:00 on January 1, 1992.

Other observers include Dawn DeVore, Dick Tetrault, Jim Scheib, Beth Brown, Michael Porter, Eugene Armstrong, Eloise Armstrong, and many unidentified observers. | Elimination of similar species: [...] Iowa Birds mentions that there is a problem separating Iceland with Thayers. If there was any problem with this bird being anything it was a Glaucous Gull of the same age. However the bird was smaller than the Herring Gulls that were on the roost. Long wings will rule out the rare small race of Glaucous Gull. There are not to [sic] many birds that have primaries lighter than the mantle in the sitting bird.

Other observers include John Cecil, Eugene Armstrong, and Eloise Armstrong. | Elimination of similar species: Northern Goshawk- Although Goshawks have been known to show pointed wings, they are never as pointed as a Falcon's. I have seen many Northern Goshawks and jizz alone would rule this one out. I saw no barring on the tail. One of the prime field marks on a Goshawk are the bright white undertail coverts which this bird did not have. The bird in question also lacked a dark crown. Peregrine Falcon- Size. No dark helmet. Jizz (mentioned above). The bird lacked overall contrast of a Peregrine Falcon. Juveniles would be brown. Prairie Falcon- Color. Prairies are a brown bird in all plumages. The underwing was uniform with no black axillaries. Habitat. Prairies feed almost exclusively on small mammals. | The original documentation form event occurred around 15:30:00.

|
|
The documentation form by Mark Brogie and Peter P. Wickham forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Paul Martsching was submitted. Another observer includes Steve Dinsmore. | Elimination of similar species: [...] The bird was in the company of several Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus) and three subadult Glaucous Gulls (Larus hyperboreus). Two of the Glaucous Gulls were light plumaged birds lacking a gray mantle and, since eye color was not noted, may have been either first or early second winter birds. The third Glaucous was quite buffy and was undoubtably [sic] a first winter bird. The Iceland Gull was first observed being chased by a light-phased Glaucous and was distinctly smaller and lighter colored. It also flew with a faster wingbeat and had a more buoyant flight than that of the larger bird. Glaucous Gulls were also observed chasing Herring Gulls but at no time was intraspecific chasing observed. During several instances two Glaucous Gulls were observed resting on the water or sitting on the ice together, but the Iceland always remained isolated from these birds. At one point the Iceland Gull circled overhead at a distance of approximately 40 yards in the company of a light-phased Glaucous and an immature Herring Gull, and characteristics between the species were well noted. The plumage of the Iceland was wholly white with a faint buffy tinge, yet distinctly whiter than the Glaucous Gull. The size difference between the Glaucous and the other two species was apparent as the Iceland and Herring were of approximately equal size. The head and bill of the Iceland Gull appeared less robust in shape than the Glaucous although both species had a bicolored bill with a flesh colored base and dark tip. [...] The brown barring of the undertail coverts of the Iceland appeared heavier and more noticable [sic] than in its white-winged congeneric counterpart, and contrasted particularly with the whitish tail. | The original documentation form event lasted for approximately twenty minutes.

Those differences were: 1) An over-all buffier (tanner or browner) color. 2) Light buffy chest that ended like a Pectoral but not a streaked-abrupt bib like Pectoral 3) Definite white eye brow 4) What appeared to be a dark brown cap on top of head. The documentation form by Ross Silcock is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include B.J. Rose, Roger Rose, and Doug Rose. | Elimination of similar species: [...] It resembled a Pectoral Sandpiper, but differed in the following ways: the crown was streaked, and showed noticeable rufous coloration in the feathering; the off-white superciliary stripe was lengthy and broadened towards the rear; the breast markings were dense as in a Pectoral but did not show a clearcut ending at the whitish belly, but instead ended indeterminately by gradually fading out. [...] Once ready to record, we flushed the bird and it gave a soft series of notes, somewhat like a Lesser Yellowlegs, but rather flat and unmelodious. This call was most unlike the harsh, grating call of a Pectoral Sandpiper. [...] Plumage, time of year, call upon flushing, and key plumage differences from Pectoral Sandpiper, cited above, led us to identify this bird as an adult Sharp-tailed Sandpiper. | The original documentation form event occurred around 10:30:00.

Other observers include Jane Huntington, James Huntington, Jim Sandrock, John Cordell, John Daniel, Mary Noble, Ken Lowder, and Tim Schantz. | Elimination of similar species: The only other species worthy of consideration is Pectoral Sandpiper. The most distinctive feature is the plain, cinnamon-buff breast without bib line or streaking centrally. The soft breast color shaded off evenly to the lower belly and throat. Some pectorals had very week [sic] breast markings, but on close inspection all had streaks and a sharp bib line. The solid rusty cap differed from any pectorals; some pectorals appeared a bit rusty on the cap, but some streaking was seen on such individuals. The eye line appeared white, and it dropped and widened posteriorly. Some pectorals had light eye lines but they were off-white, less distinct, and straighter. The juvenile feathers of the upper parts were edged with rufous; this was especially prominent on the tertials. Some pectorals appeared to have rusty edging on the tertials, but this was dependent on lighting and at least one rufous appearing pectoral had the color more in the center of the feathers with grayer edging. The gray smudging on the undertail coverts I saw once and only had a glance at a nearby pectoral for comparison, so I am not very confident of this mark. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:20:00/09:25:00, 09:55:00/10:00:00, and intermittently 16:15:00/17:00:00.

The documentation form by Peter C. Petersen forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Brian Blevins was submitted later. | Elimination of similar species: Pectoral Sandpipers, available side-by-side, were slightly larger, legs & bill a bit longer than Sharp-tailed. White eyebrow on Pectorals did not broaden behind eye cap not as richly colored in Pectorals. Pectorals had streaking across buff breast wash uniformly to lower edge of buff. Back of Sharp-tailed seemed more uniformly rich brown than those of the Pectorals. Birds all departed downstream on Miss. before photos could be attempted. | The original documentation form event lasted from 15:50:00/15:55:00.

The documentation form by Matthew Kenne is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: The lack of facial pattern and white throat and chest rule out peregrine, as the bird was flying almost directly into the sun (perpendicular to me). It wasn't as pale or brown as a prairie, and with shadow and distance there wasn't any dark/light pattern to the underwing. It wasn't black as a crow + the shape was wrong. Eagles were patterned and obviously larger. | The original documentation form event occurred around 13:10:00.
