It was near the size and shape of a Peregrine with long tapered wings & slim body. I knew this wasn't a Peregrine (but an immature male Peregrine & an imm. Mississippi Kite are similar). However the slim, pointed wings of this bird had a different shape; the tail was longer, proportionately, than a Peregrine's, & squared-off rather than tapered like a Peregrine's. I couldn't see if its tail flared at the tip, but in the gap where we had a second, very quick look, Eloise noted its twisting of the tail which is a Mississippi Kite trait. But it was the wing beat that determined absolutely that it was a Mississippi Kite- light, bouyant, [sic] floppy, leisurely, like a moth-so different from the powerful, rapid, direct flight of a Peregrine, and different from any other raptor's flight we have observed. | The original documentation form event lasted from 10:30:00/10:31:00.

Other documentations by Babs and Loren Padelford as well as Paul Lehman were submitted later. | Elimination of similar species: [...] Later it was seen at rest with Ring-billed and Franklin's Gulls, the latter group including a few individuals of the same age as the Laughing Gull, allowing careful comparison. [...] The wings were long and pointed, the overall jizz of the bird more attenuated than a Franklin's. [...] There was a grayish-black wash over the crown and nape, slightly intensified in the upper nuchal area, and a paler grayish wash on the flanks in the area below the bend of the wing, imparting a "dirtier" look to the underparts than on same-age Franklin's Gulls (seen when at rest). At rest, the black primaries extended well past the tail, a feature compared easily with nearby Franklin's, and there were no small white crescents in the primaries of the Laughing Gull, a feature easily seen in same-age Franklin's nearby. The Laughing Gull was almost as big as the Ringbills near it, while it appeared significantly larger than the adjacent Franklin's. | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:30:00/11:40:00.

It wasn't as pale or brown as a prairie, and with shadow and distance there wasn't any dark/light pattern to the underwing. It wasn't black as a crow + the shape was wrong. Other observers include Michael Bornstein. | Elimination of similar species: [...] The bird was most similar to the dark phase rough-legged hawk (Bureo lagopus) in size and general shape, but the latter species lacks the deep rust coloration on the upper wing coverts, scapulars, and upper back, and also has some dark banding on the outer one-half of the tail. Although by no means a conclusive characteristic, the subject bird did not hover during the period we observed it, a characteristic typical of hunting Rough-legged hawks. Dark phase Swainson's hawk have much darker, barred flight feathers and tail when viewed from below than that of the subject bird. | The original documentation form event lasted from 12:30:00/12:45:00.
