A molting Black-headed Grosbeak would be larger, more plump, and would show a very noticable [sic] white wing flash in flight. Bangma's first reaction, upon seeing the facial pattern, was Reed Bunting, but the buffy underparts eliminate that species. Winter males are differentiated from McCowns and Lapland longspurs by the more extensive black mottling on the crown, chest and upper belly, and the tail pattern. Females were distinguished by the tail pattern. Try as I would, I could not stretch the black tail triangle into an inverted black T pattern!! Other observers include Bill Fribley and Paul Hagen. \| Elimination of similar species: Only similar groups would be crows, jays and blackbirds.
