Female Ruddy duck is smaller + white does not extend onto throat or neck, also differs in properties (stockier, with heavier head + neck for size). A statement from Lotus Miller on behalf of the Ames Audubon Society in preparation for a public hearing on September 26, 1973, regarding the potential flooding of Ledges State Park due to the Saylorville Reservoir and dam project. The members of the society are concerned the flooding of the lower valley at Ledges State Park would destroy the habitat of the birds inhabiting the park, many of them rare species found nowhere else in Iowa. The members believe the best alternative to prevent the drastic change to the habitat and appearance of the lower canyon is a channel change barrier dam.
