The documentation form by Pam and Reid Allen is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Thomas H. Kent and J. Fuller were submitted later. | Elimination of similar species: The Western Grebes (Aechmorphorus occidentalis) had a much duller, greyish-greenish yellow bill and the body and flanks were blacker. Plus, the black cap extended over the eyes and lores. The Western Grebes seemed to be slightly smaller headed than the Clark's Grebe. | The original documentation form event lasted from 17:30:00/18:30:00.

The documentation form by Ann Johnson is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: The primary identification was done through the size and shape of the head. The bird was lighter in color than the first-winter herring gulls in the same area and the wing pattern on both upper and lower sides eliminated herring, ring-billed and Iceland gulls. | The original documentation form event lasted from 12:42:00/12:42:00.

The documentation form by Thomas H. Kent is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Louise Augustine and Dick Tetrault. | Elimination of similar species: The juvenile bird is distinctive and I was able to pick it out quickly. When we first saw the second-year bird, we considered both Franklin's and Laughing gulls. A juvenile or first-winter Franklin's would not have uniform gray in the wing coverts. A second-summer or second-winter Franklin's Gull would not have a full tail band. The bill shape also favors Laughing Gull. The bird appears to be in second-winter plumage, except for the tail band which fits better with first-summer plumage. I was impressed with the soft grayness of the bird and its similarity the birds I photographed recently in North Carolina. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:30:00/11:15:00.

[...] In general size, this bird appeared almost twice the size of the Ring-billed Gulls, and considerably larger than the Herring Gulls, maybe 25%. It also had a massive bill compared to either of those species. [...] The legs were a dull gray-pink, and they were noticeably thicker than those of the Herring or Ring-billed Gulls. | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:05:00/11:35:00.

The documentation form by Ross Silcock is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentations by Babs and Loren Padelford as well as Paul Lehman were submitted later. | Elimination of similar species: [...] Later it was seen at rest with Ring-billed and Franklin's Gulls, the latter group including a few individuals of the same age as the Laughing Gull, allowing careful comparison. [...] The wings were long and pointed, the overall jizz of the bird more attenuated than a Franklin's. [...] There was a grayish-black wash over the crown and nape, slightly intensified in the upper nuchal area, and a paler grayish wash on the flanks in the area below the bend of the wing, imparting a "dirtier" look to the underparts than on same-age Franklin's Gulls (seen when at rest). At rest, the black primaries extended well past the tail, a feature compared easily with nearby Franklin's, and there were no small white crescents in the primaries of the Laughing Gull, a feature easily seen in same-age Franklin's nearby. The Laughing Gull was almost as big as the Ringbills near it, while it appeared significantly larger than the adjacent Franklin's. | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:30:00/11:40:00.

The documentation form by Thomas H. Kent is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Ann Johnson and Jim Fuller were submitted later. Other observers include Dick Tetrault, Chuck Fuller, and Tim Schantz. | Elimination of similar species: The Records Committee has not accepted two previous records of Fish Crow along the Mississippi River in Louisa County because of the difficulty in substantiating the identification. I was well aware of this, and like other committee members, I believed that they were likely present in this area. I can only say that I was watching the birds when I heard them, which eliminates the possibility that they were young American Crows. I would not want to rely on the morphologic features. I was impressed that this group stayed together in the flooded woods, which was unlike the behavior of the American Crows. | The original documentation form event lasted from 08:40:00/09:30:00 and 10:25:00/10:35:00.

Although by no means a conclusive characteristic, the subject bird did not hover during the period we observed it, a characteristic typical of hunting Rough-legged hawks. Dark phase Swainson's hawk have much darker, barred flight feathers and tail when viewed from below than that of the subject bird. | The original documentation form event lasted from 12:30:00/12:45:00.

Another observer was Russell Hays. | Elimination of similar species: Bonaparte's does not have a dark stripe across the nape, its tail is not forked and it has a black trailing edge to the wing, not white as as this bird did. Bonaparte's would have shown more white in the primaries also. Coloration was not the same as a Red-legged Kittiwake or Sabine's Gull. | The original documentation form event lasted from 13:05:00/13:15:00.

The documentation form by Robert Cecil is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Another observer includes Doug Reeves. | Elimination of similar species: First year Herring much more "contrasty"--see above. Kumlien's Iceland Gull...According to Seabirds (Harrison), 1st year Iceland is more pale, tail uniform gray. Overall body coloration is more like 1st year Glaucous--bird I saw was darker than 1st year Glaucous. [...] The important thing about this uniformity that the accompanying first year Herring Gulls had much contrast, showing whitish head, darker wingtips, dark at the tip of the underwings (sometimes), and most obviously, much darker secondaries, creating a dark trailing edge to the wings. Their general color was a darker chocolatey brown. [...] BILL: Pinkish--noticably [sic] smaller that [sic] Herrings. This is pretty subjective, but at about 2/3 of the way across the river at the dam (maybe one third mile) the bill on a Herring can be easily seen through my scope. [...] A very indistinct darkening (wing, upper surface) of the first two or three primaries. The mark had to be looked for to be seen--on the Herring it was much more evident. [...] At some times, the bird showed secondaries that were slightly darker than the rest of the wing. Slightly should be emphasized--at no time was it even close to the darkness of the secondaries of the first year Herring. [...] There was a very slight and indistinct darkening to the first two or three primaries, but this had to be looked for carefully. I have also seen a number of 1st year Herring Gulls that fit this description, but all have a distinct window at base of primaries. | The original documentation form event occurred at various times during the date range of sightings on the documentation form.
