[...] Lake Manawa State Park, near Council Bluffs, IA. [...] was travelling south on the road that follows the west edge of Lake Manawa.
The documentation letter by Manit Bunnimit is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: [...] It flew for most of the time by soaring with its wings held very flat, only twice flapping its wings momentarily (shallow wingbeats) and once folding its wings rather tightly and gliding. All of the crows I have seen flap steadily, gliding only occasionally. [...] It could not have been mistaken even for the tails of the occasional American Crows that appear quite rounded. The sheer size of the bird and the wedge-shaped tail were enough to distinguish it from any of the crows, but what about the Chihuahuan Raven? Fortunately, as it flew by, the bird made two brief call notes that were very hoarse (sounding much more like grrrawgk than the gaw of the American Crow), and much deeper than the Chihuahuan Raven that I heard in northern Texas. However, because it has been a few years since I had seen or heard the Chihuahuan, I decided to double check the calls on a tape I had at home. The tape and I agree that the call was that of a Common Raven. | The original documentation form event lasted from approximately 11:10:00/11:11:00.

The documentation form by Dave Carlisle is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: [...] In my attempts to identify the birds, my first observations led me to believe they both were wrens; however, they were larger than the common house wren and lacked the definite light eye ring. [...] I took notice that the bird in hand lacked the definite eye stripe characteristic of the Bewick's, Carolina, and Marsh wrens. There were no white stripes on the back as in the Marsh Wren and it did not have the white outer tail feathers characteristic of Bewick's Wren. | The original documentation form event occurred lasted from approximately 07:50:00/08:00:00.

[...] Oak Grove Beach Recreation Area at Saylorville Reservoir, Polk County.
The article by Stephen J. Dinsmore forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: [...]The bird was similar in size to the largest Ring-billed Gulls, but slightly larger than others. I approached closer and noted that, when compared to a Ring-billed Gull, the bird had duller yellow legs, a stouter bill with black and red spots near the tip of the lower mandible, and a darker gray mantle. [...] The bird was slightly larger than most of the Ring-billed Gulls, although one or two of the biggest Ring-billed Gulls were as large as the bird I was studying. Proportionately, the bird was heavier and larger-headed than a Ring-billed Gull. [...] I estimated the mantle color to be about midway between those of Ring-billed Gull and a Lesser Black-backed Gull. [...] The bill was heavier than the bill of a Ring-billed Gull and had a distinct gonys. The legs were pale gray-green, unlike the bright yellow legs of a Ring-billed Gull. Leg length appeared similar to a Ring-billed Gull. | The original documentation form event lasted from 07:45:00/09:27:00.

Moorehead Pioneer Park
[...] path near the Maple river at Moorehead Park
The documentation by Peter Ernzen is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: [...] I initially thought that the bird was a Mourning Warbler - common at Moorehead Park at this time of the year in this type of habitat. [...] I observed a broken eye ring on both sides of the head of this bird. The broken eye ring could best be described as " two bold white crescents" - above and below the eye. The other feature which stuck in my mind was the relatively long looking - "longer looking than Mourning" - tail on this particular bird. At first I tried to dismiss this bird as a nontypical Mourning Warbler. I have seen on several occasions Mourning warblers with slight eye rings - making identification of fall Connecticut and irregular Mourning warblers somewhat difficult. For the next week I returned to the spot hoping for a glimpse of the bird. This proved useless. I had hoped to see this bird as my notes were rather sketchy and incomplete. Consisting primarily of "bird with 2 bold white crescents" around the eyes, and "appeared longer tailed than Mourning". Otherwise the bird looked very similar to a fall male mourning warlber [sic]. | The original documentation form event occurred in the afternoon and lasted around 10 seconds.

The documentation by Peter Ernzen forms the basis of this record. A documentation form by Jim Fuller was submitted. | Elimination of similar species: [...] The other five hooded gulls were eliminated for a variety of reasons. Franklin's and Laughing Gull would be larger, darker mantled and have a prominent eye ring. Sabine's Gull would've had a bicolored bill, forked tail and different - white triangular - pattern to its wings. The larger Common Black-headed Gull looks like a larger version of a Bonaparte's Gull with a brownish hood and a red bill. The associated Bonaparte's Gulls were darker mantled and larger. The wings were more angular in appearance with a white leading edge and black wing tips. I have observed all but the Laughing Gull - though the Sabine's Gulls were immature, the distinctive wing pattern is present in both adults and immatures - and feel confident in calling this an adult Little Gull. | The original documentation form event lasted from 10:15:00/10:30:00 and 11:00:00/11:08:00.
