The documentation form by Mark Osrag is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Sue Mattix. | Elimination of similar species: Dark immature gulls were eliminated by flight pattern, body-to-wing shape profile (as above), and the well seen identical translucent patches on the wings. Other jaeger species were eliminated by the bird's size. It thermalled above a wetland area beyond HNA's 'Westridge' with a group of Ring-billed Gulls. Size comparison was perfect-revealing a noticeably larger, heavier-bodied bird. | The original documentation form event lasted from 14:45:00/14:55:00.

Despite the great distance and lack of a good view of the wing pattern, I believe the bird was a Pomarine Jaeger. | The original documentation form event lasted from 13:45:00/14:43:00.

At the time I did not realize the importance of this detail, but I recorded it along with my other field notes as I knew from past reading that distinguishing between Long-tailed and Parasitic Jaegers could be tricky. | The original documentation form event occurred around 18:00:00.

Bill was gull-like, but hooked mail different. May have been exagerated [sic] by a darker color than basal portion. Yellow rail: absolute lack of white wing patches; My bird was black - with no suggestion of lighter color anywhere. Virginia rail: eliminated by size and color of bird Could possibly have been a rail chick of another species - ruled out because of presence of chicks at this late date + would have been extremely extraordinary; and because chicks would be incapable of flight. | The original documentation form event occurred around 11:00:00.

The documentation form by Ross Silcock is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Loren Padelford, Babs Padelford, Tanya Bray, BJ Rose, Doug Rose, and Roger Rose. | Elimination of similar species: [...] Loren remarked on a pale one which we passed off as a Sanderling, even though it was feeding methodically and appeared to have some markings not characteristic of a Sanderling (we were still looking for a Laughing Gull!). [...] We re-examined the bird and I noted the following - a shorebird about Pectoral SDP. size but a little more elongated + less plump. [...] Bill similar to Pectoral SDP but straighter + a little heavier. [...] Also noticeable was dark coloration at bend of wing, when bird feeding. Latter was deliberate, rather like Dowitcher, head often under water. [...] (2) Difficulty of eliminating Red-necked Phalarope - I believe this is achieved due to the following (a) Red has much thicker bill (b) Red is significantly larger } Size comparison with Lesser Yellowlegs at IPL indicated this bird was not a small Phalarope. Bill was very heavy - as heavy or more so as a Pectoral's bill. | The original documentation form event lasted from approximately 12:15:00/13:30:00.
