The documentation form by Dave Carlisle is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: [...] In my attempts to identify the birds, my first observations led me to believe they both were wrens; however, they were larger than the common house wren and lacked the definite light eye ring. [...] I took notice that the bird in hand lacked the definite eye stripe characteristic of the Bewick's, Carolina, and Marsh wrens. There were no white stripes on the back as in the Marsh Wren and it did not have the white outer tail feathers characteristic of Bewick's Wren. | The original documentation form event occurred lasted from approximately 07:50:00/08:00:00.

|
The documentation form by Dawn L. De Vore is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Don Poggensee and Pam Poggensee. | Elimination of similar species: Loggerhead Shrike: On the bird that was seen the top of the bill was dark black and the bottom was a lighter in color. A Loggerhead has a completely black bill. The bird that was seen was a light gray, much lighter than a Loggerhead adult. The bird was not a juv. Loggerhead because the black patch on the head is very different than that of a Loggerhead. On a Loggerhead the black area or patch is very wide and runs along both over and under the eye, it also continues back toward the back of the head meeting up with the gray on the back of the birds head. On the bird that was seen the black area or patch did not run both over and under the eye, it only ran under the eye. Also the patch did not meet up with the gray on the back of the birds head, the black area was surrounded on three sides by white, never letting the black meet up with the gray. | The original documentation form event lasted from approximately 15:00:00/15:10:00.

The documentation form by Ann Johnson forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Tim Schantz was submitted. Other observers include Roy Godwin and Jim Sinclair. | Elimination of similar species: Body and bill shape and behavior identified this bird as a flycatcher. The size, eye-ring and wing bars eliminated all but Empidonax flycatchers. Because of the late date on this bird, it is difficult to get an understanding of molt sequences which may or may not be helpful. From what I can find on molts, however, the following is based on best available information. | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:40:00/11:55:00 and approximately 13:30:00/14:00:00.

Another observer was John Rutenbeck. | Elimination of similar species: Great-tailed grackle - as described. [...] Two things were apparent: On profile the head and particularly the bill were that of an ani and not of a grackle. [...] One other note - When I first flushed the bird it made a startled cry. This cry was very similar, if not identical to the last part of the Groove-billed Ani call on Peterson's Field Guide to Western Birds record. The bill shape, dark cap that included the eye, and presence of two white patches on each side eliminates all other murrelets, especially Kittlitz's. | The original documentation form event lasted from 15:15:00/15:24:00.

fly-over hill overlooking Des Moines River valley
|
The documentation form by Matthew Kenne is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: Wrong color for a gull, no terminal tail bands, no gray, no white except for the lightness at the base of primaries, no darker primaries (black wingtips). Bill was gull-like, but hooked mail different. May have been exagerated [sic] by a darker color than basal portion. Flight was direct and strong, a "confident" feel I get from birds of prey. | The original documentation form event occurred around an estimated 11:15:00.

The documentation form by Ross Silcock is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Loren Padelford, Babs Padelford, Tanya Bray, BJ Rose, Doug Rose, and Roger Rose. | Elimination of similar species: [...] Loren remarked on a pale one which we passed off as a Sanderling, even though it was feeding methodically and appeared to have some markings not characteristic of a Sanderling (we were still looking for a Laughing Gull!). [...] We re-examined the bird and I noted the following - a shorebird about Pectoral SDP. size but a little more elongated + less plump. [...] Bill similar to Pectoral SDP but straighter + a little heavier. [...] Also noticeable was dark coloration at bend of wing, when bird feeding. Latter was deliberate, rather like Dowitcher, head often under water. [...] (2) Difficulty of eliminating Red-necked Phalarope - I believe this is achieved due to the following (a) Red has much thicker bill (b) Red is significantly larger } Size comparison with Lesser Yellowlegs at IPL indicated this bird was not a small Phalarope. Bill was very heavy - as heavy or more so as a Pectoral's bill. | The original documentation form event lasted from approximately 12:15:00/13:30:00.

The documentation form by Steve Dinsmore is the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Jim Dinsmore, Bob Myers, Robert Cecil, Ann Johnson, Jim Fuller, Michael K. Thomas, and Mark Proescholdt were submitted. Other observers include Dennis Thompson, Betsy Myers, Eugene Armstrong, Eloise Armstrong, and many unidentified observers. | Elimination of similar species: The large size should eliminate all peeps. The bird was also larger than Sanderlings in direct comparison. Otherwise, the bill shape and dull yellow legs would eliminate Sanderling and Dunlin. | The original documentation form event lasted from 06:53:00/07:41:00 and 08:15:00/09:35:00.

The documentation form by Tanya E. Bray is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Babs Padelford, Loren Padelford, Marc Lund, and Bob Myers were submitted later. Other observers include B.J. Rose, Doug Rose, Roger Rose, Dave Starr, and Jerry Toll. | Elimination of similar species: Pacific Loon, eliminated by red color of throat patch and shape of bill. This bird's bill was more like that of a Eared Grebe; that is, very slender and not as loon-like as that of Pacific Loon. Pacific Loon's bill looks like a small Common Loon. Pacific Loon's bill looks like a small Common Loon. Common Loon: eliminated by size of bird, shape of bill, and red throated patch. | The original documentation form event lasted from 16:15:00/16:45:00.
