The documentation form by Tanya E. Bray is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Babs Padelford, Loren Padelford, Marc Lund, and Bob Myers were submitted later. Other observers include B.J. Rose, Doug Rose, Roger Rose, Dave Starr, and Jerry Toll. | Elimination of similar species: Pacific Loon, eliminated by red color of throat patch and shape of bill. This bird's bill was more like that of a Eared Grebe; that is, very slender and not as loon-like as that of Pacific Loon. Pacific Loon's bill looks like a small Common Loon. Pacific Loon's bill looks like a small Common Loon. Common Loon: eliminated by size of bird, shape of bill, and red throated patch. | The original documentation form event lasted from 16:15:00/16:45:00.

The documentation form by Ann Johnson is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Tanya E. Bray was submitted later. Other observers include Babs Padelford, BJ Rose, Ross Silcock, and Tim Schantz. | Elimination of similar species: Cormorants could be eliminated by bill shape, among other characteristics. The bird had some similarities to a Western Grebe, but the grebe would hold its head parallel to the water, has a longer neck, and does not show the contrast between head/nape and back. Common Loon was eliminated by posture, size and shape of bill, contrast of lighter head and darker back, and more diffuse separation of upper and underparts. Pacific Loon was eliminated by the grayer underparts, diffuse separation of upper and underparts, posture, and sharp upward angle on lower mandible. | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:50:00/12:15:00.

The documentation form by Thomas H. Kent is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Jim Fuller, Ann Johnson, and Carol Thompson. Other observers include Ken Lowder, Jim Scheib, Bud Goode, Cal Knight, Bernie Knight, and Beth Brown. | Elimination of similar species: The head posture resembled a cormorant, but the bill, overall coloration, and behavior quickly excluded that possibility. The size and bill led me to an immediate identification. I was puzzled about the plumage. I expected to see a juvenile or basic-plumaged bird, but the distribution of dark coloration was that of alternate plumage. I assume that the red/black throat, lines of neck, and gray tones had faded to give one rather uniform color. The drab light may have contributed some to the failure to see color differences, but the last observation was relatively close and the texture of the feathers could be seen. | The original documentation form event lasted from 07:45:00-08:30:00 and 12:20:00-12:45:00.

Furthermore, Red-necked has the gray extending further onto the crown, shows white streaking on the back, and would not have remnants of red color on the throat and upper foreneck. | The original documentation form event lasted from 17:00:00/17:05:00.

Other observers include Loren Padelford, Babs Padelford, Tanya Bray, BJ Rose, Doug Rose, and Roger Rose. | Elimination of similar species: [...] Loren remarked on a pale one which we passed off as a Sanderling, even though it was feeding methodically and appeared to have some markings not characteristic of a Sanderling (we were still looking for a Laughing Gull!). [...] We re-examined the bird and I noted the following - a shorebird about Pectoral SDP. size but a little more elongated + less plump. [...] Bill similar to Pectoral SDP but straighter + a little heavier. [...] Also noticeable was dark coloration at bend of wing, when bird feeding. Latter was deliberate, rather like Dowitcher, head often under water. [...] (2) Difficulty of eliminating Red-necked Phalarope - I believe this is achieved due to the following (a) Red has much thicker bill (b) Red is significantly larger } Size comparison with Lesser Yellowlegs at IPL indicated this bird was not a small Phalarope. Bill was very heavy - as heavy or more so as a Pectoral's bill. | The original documentation form event lasted from approximately 12:15:00/13:30:00.

The documentation form by Steve Dinsmore is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: The reddish color on the underparts eliminates all shorebirds except Red Knot, Curlew Sandpiper, and Sanderling. The pale legs and bill shape eliminate Curlew Sandpiper. The larger size, bill shape, and pale legs eliminate Sanderling. | The original documentation form event lasted from 08:40:00/10:30:00.

The documentation form by Stephen J. Dinsmore is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: The combination of size, bill shape, and wing and tail patterns eliminates all other shorebirds. The most similar species would probably be Sanderling and Dunlin, both of which would be much smaller than this bird. | The original documentation form event lasted from 08:55:00/09:10:00.

The documentation form by Steve Dinsmore is the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Jim Dinsmore, Bob Myers, Robert Cecil, Ann Johnson, Jim Fuller, Michael K. Thomas, and Mark Proescholdt were submitted. Other observers include Dennis Thompson, Betsy Myers, Eugene Armstrong, Eloise Armstrong, and many unidentified observers. | Elimination of similar species: The large size should eliminate all peeps. The documentation form with an attachment by Michael Newlon is the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Thomas H. Kent and two documentation forms for two separate sightings by Carl Bendorf. | Elimination of similar species: Build, pale wings + color pattern, feather pattern on back/coverts distinctive. [...] No other calidrine sandpiper likely to be found in Iowa combines the coloration, size, and proportions of the Knot. The only species that combine the overall grey coloration and the heavy straight bill are Sanderling, much smaller, and Willet, much larger and longer-legged, with blue-grey rather than black bill and legs. The other shorebirds that are remotely similar are the Tattlers, which have more slender bills and paler legs; basic-plumaged Surfbird, which has a shorter, thicker bill, yellow at base, pale legs, and less-distinct face-pattern (but similar pattern on coverts/ scapulars/tertials); Great knot, which is supposed to lack a distinct supercilium, have round black spots on chest and flanks, black upperparts, a longer, more slender bill. .
