Seeing white on the tail I thought 'Rough-leg'. But this bird had absolutely flat wings as it approached head-on, not with the Rough-legs' 'up-and-out' wing pattern. The bird was perched on the north edge of a stand of trees bordering the Iowa River. Snow covered cornfields were n. of trees.
