The documentation form by Thomas H. Kent is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Jim Fuller, Ann Johnson, and Carol Thompson. Other observers include Ken Lowder, Jim Scheib, Bud Goode, Cal Knight, Bernie Knight, and Beth Brown. | Elimination of similar species: The head posture resembled a cormorant, but the bill, overall coloration, and behavior quickly excluded that possibility. The size and bill led me to an immediate identification. I was puzzled about the plumage. I expected to see a juvenile or basic-plumaged bird, but the distribution of dark coloration was that of alternate plumage. I assume that the red/black throat, lines of neck, and gray tones had faded to give one rather uniform color. The drab light may have contributed some to the failure to see color differences, but the last observation was relatively close and the texture of the feathers could be seen. | The original documentation form event lasted from 07:45:00-08:30:00 and 12:20:00-12:45:00.

Kent, and Peter C. Petersen were submitted later. Other observers include Jim Fuller and Jim Sandrock. | Elimination of similar species: Horned grebes in winter plumage were present, they are about 1/2 the size of this loon, have a much shorter straight bill and the head shape is flatter. Common loon is much larger with a correspondingly large straight black bill, head held straight. Arctic loon in winter plumage would have less white in the facial area, a straight dark bill, less contrast from the facial area to cup/nape. | The original documentation form event lasted from 06:15:00/06:45:00.

Red-necked Phalarope is superficially similar but the bill is much more needle-like. Furthermore, Red-necked has the gray extending further onto the crown, shows white streaking on the back, and would not have remnants of red color on the throat and upper foreneck. | The original documentation form event lasted from 17:00:00/17:05:00.

Other observers includes David Youngblut and Larry Morris. | Elimination of similar species: The posture, behavior, and black and white color pattern rule out all shorebirds except phalaropes. The size, "hunchbacked" appearance, bill shape, head pattern, and unstreaked, gray upperparts eliminates Red-necked and Wilson's phalaropes. | The original documentation form event lasted from 16:46:00/17:05:00 on September 30, 1988 and 14:12:00/16:05:00 on October 1, 1988.

Other observers include Pam Allen, Reid Allen, and many unidentified other observers. | Elimination of similar species: There are very few shorebirds that are this pale. Compared directly to a Sanderling, this bird had a longer neck, a dark cap, a black spot around the eye, and darker upperwings which were particularly visible in flight. Red-necked Phalarope (which would be even more unusual at this date) was eliminated by bill size and shape and unstreaked mantle. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:35:00/10:15:00.

A Red-Necked Phalarope has vivid streaks on its back and a longer, thinner bill. The documentation form by Ross Silcock is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Loren Padelford, Babs Padelford, Tanya Bray, BJ Rose, Doug Rose, and Roger Rose. | Elimination of similar species: [...] Loren remarked on a pale one which we passed off as a Sanderling, even though it was feeding methodically and appeared to have some markings not characteristic of a Sanderling (we were still looking for a Laughing Gull!). [...] We re-examined the bird and I noted the following - a shorebird about Pectoral SDP. size but a little more elongated + less plump. [...] Bill similar to Pectoral SDP but straighter + a little heavier. [...] Also noticeable was dark coloration at bend of wing, when bird feeding. Latter was deliberate, rather like Dowitcher, head often under water. [...] (2) Difficulty of eliminating Red-necked Phalarope - I believe this is achieved due to the following (a) Red has much thicker bill (b) Red is significantly larger } Size comparison with Lesser Yellowlegs at IPL indicated this bird was not a small Phalarope. Bill was very heavy - as heavy or more so as a Pectoral's bill. | The original documentation form event lasted from approximately 12:15:00/13:30:00.

I knew it was unusual and also knew it was a Red Knot from the breast and the bill size which I estimated as twice as long as the Killdeers bill and Dowitcher - bill was shorter than dowitcher and dark back. I tried to think of other shorebirds it could have been and the dowitcher species was what I could imagine, but its bill was too short. | The original documentation form event lasted from 19:30:00/19:35:00.

The documentation form by Thomas H. Kent is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Jim Fuller was submitted later. Other observers include Tom Johnson and Mary Montgomery. | Elimination of similar species: The size was too large for a peep and bit larger than Sanderlings. Dunlin and Curlew Sandpiper would have a longer, drooped bill, and be smaller with shorter black legs. | The original documentation form event lasted from 06:25:00/07:00:00.

The documentation form by Steve Dinsmore is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Hank Zaletal, Jim Dinsmore, Mark Proescholdt, and Paul Martsching were submitted later. Other observers include Joe Schaufenbuel. | Elimination of similar species: peeps sp. because of smaller size, lack of gray scaly back, lack of white stripe above eye and lack of black wing tips with white wing stripe. Sanderling was eliminated by smaller size, unscaly back, larger amount of black on wings and lack of necklace on breast. Eliminated from other shore birds by combination of chunky short legged appearance, white wing stripe, necklace on breast and grayish, scaly appearance. | The original documentation form event lasted from 13:00:00/18:30:00.
