The documentation form by Thomas H. Kent is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: The bill and body proportions were those of a Dunlin, but the date and plumage were new for me. The streaks on the underparts, worn edging on some wing feathers, and eye line appear to be retained alternate features, while the lack of black on belly and rufous in wing are features of basic plumage. I assume that this was an adult partially molted to basic plumage. Although Dunlin is usually a late fall migrant, both Iowa and Minnesota have a few July records. According to Prater et al. (1977), nearctic birds molt before migrating; therefore, a bird in mostly basic plumage would not be unusual. White-rumped Sandpiper is exclude [sic] by the tail pattern, body proportions and bill length. Baird's Sandpiper has a shorter bill, longer tail/wing extension, slimmer profile, and browner and scaly upperparts. | The original documentation form event lasted from 14:00:00/14:45:00 approximately.

Bird was in old willows at edge of reservoir.
|
The documentation form by Thomas H. Kent is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: The brown color most closely matched that shown by Peterson (1980) for the male Black-headed Grosbeak. The features I saw best were the brown rump, the contrast between the brown breast and flanks and gray belly, the thin white wing bars, and the darker color of wings and tail. The fact that the bird was singing loudly and continuously indicates that it was a male. The lack of breast streaking, dark color, and failure to see an eye stripe also argue against the bird being a female. The rich brown coloration only fits Black-headed Grosbeak. No features that fit Rose-breasted Grosbeak, such as red on the breast or underwings, white flanks or rump, or light-colored bill, were seen. Failure to see a demarcated black head and white in the wing and tail in flight is disturbing, but the side to back lighting and brief duration of each look at the bird (when I concentrated on looking at the features cited above) may account for this. The wing bars were not as wide as usually depicked [sic] for males. Perhaps the bird was in first nuptial plumage. | The original documentation form event lasted from 08:20:00/08:30:00.

Other observers include Russell Hays, Tom Kent, Tom Shires, Tom Staudt, and many unidentified other observers. | Elimination of similar species: Ring-billed Gull and Herring Gull, see above. The Ring-billed Gulls were seen in direct contrast to these three birds and were definitely much smaller birds. The Herring Gulls (first year birds) that I have seen have more of a contrast between the rump and back and upper wing surfaces and none that I remember showed the whitish trailing edge on the tail. [...] The three birds seen were about the size of Herring Gulls in typical first year plumage. They were obviously large gulls of the genus Larus with a noticeably larger size than the Ring-billed Gulls and one Bonaparte's Gull that were next to the three larger birds. [...] There were no Herring Gulls nearby with which to make a comparison of size and coloration. The bills of all three gulls were black did not seem as heavy or bulky as the bill of a Herring Gull. | The original documentation form event lasted from 08:10:00/09:30:00.

The documentation form by Richard Hollis is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Jim Fuller and Carol Thompson. | Elimination of similar species: After ruling out Horned & Eared Grebes due to bill size & color & shape the only possibilities for this bird are Western Grebe and smaller loons. 1. Red-throated loon seems ruled out by shape of bill. 2. In fact all loons & W. Grebe seem ruled out by bicolored bill. 3. Posture & Build were slimmer than most loons I've seen. 4. Neck which definitely was grey (in past) all the way around in front also seems to rule out there. I am puzzled by 2 things & although I'm sure it is a RN Grebe I wonder if it is in some intermediate plummage [sic]. 1 White patch at waterline in front. I saw this distinctly & sketched it on 11/9 as well as on a brief look at the bird on 11/16. 2 Dark cap seems to extend farther down the head than any of the plates would lead me to expect. | The original documentation form event lasted from 07:45:00/08:15:00.

The documentation form by Randall Pinkston is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: Contrasted with first-winter Herring Gull above. First-winter Iceland typically much paler, especially the uppersurface of the primaries which are paler than the rest of the mantle, and Iceland should show mottling in the tertials and tail band. I suppose I cannot exclude a heavily-pigmented 'Kumlien's' Gull or an Iceland-Thayer's intergrade as described in Kevin Zimmer's Birding article. Both species are apparently highly variable. | The original documentation form event lasted from 10:45:00/11:15:00.
