General: marsh with pond nearby Specific: wet grassy area - much old tall grass bent down by snow last winter.
|
The documentation form by Paul Martsching is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include an unidentified observer. | Elimination of similar species: After seeing the first one and going thru all the pictures of sparrows was at a lose [sic] to know what I'd seen. Later we went back. The only sparrows with black & white face pattern (Wh Crnd & Wh Throated) are only black & white from the eyes up. Only realized was seeing a longspur about the time the last male disappeared in the grass. Were unable to flush. | The original documentation form event lasted from 14:00:00/14:00:30 and 17:15:00/17:16:00 for the female bird and 17:15:00/17:15:10 for the male bird.

The documentation form by Ann Johnson and Jim Bangma is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: Although the time of observation was fairly short, the facial pattern and buffy underparts were definitely that of an adult male Smith's Longspur. A molting Black-headed Grosbeak would be larger, more plump, and would show a very noticable [sic] white wing flash in flight. Bangma's first reaction, upon seeing the facial pattern, was Reed Bunting, but the buffy underparts eliminate that species. No other bird combines the characteristics we observed. | The original documentation form event lasted from 07:15:00/07:15:59.

The documentation form by Larry Stone is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: The distinctive bird had rusty-bronze plumage on its back, tail and head. (The contrast with the emerald-green ruby-throats that had been using the feeder was obvious.) The gorget was bright, and more orange than on ruby-throats. But when we saw a female or immature ruby-throat later in the day, we remarked that it looked smaller, slimmer and greener than the rufous. The documentation form by James Fuller is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Another documentation form by Thomas Kent was submitted later. Other observers include Allen Martin, and Jane Fuller. | Elimination of similar species: Anna's Hummingbird has gray (not white) underparts. Kaufman's 'Advanced Birding' suggests that female and immature male Ruby-throated and Black-chinned cannot be identified except in the hand. This bird may have been molting into first alternate plumage, because of the red circular area on the throat. It would seem that an area such as this would be red in a Ruby-throat and purple in Black-chinned. | The original documentation form event lasted from 07:55:00/08:45:00.
