The documentation form by Michael Newlon forms the basis of this record. Other documentation forms by Rick Hollis and Thomas H. Kent were submitted. Another observer was Carol Newlon. | Elimination of similar species: Call notes and behavior strongly suggest longspur, as does association with lapland: tail pattern, face pattern, coloration suggest Smith's. (over) voice + strong facial pattern rules out vesper sparrow (as does numbers and behavior. Lack of white in greater coverts rules out ♀/i lark bunting. | The original documentation form event lasted from 08:30:00/09:30:00.

Other observers include Cal and Bernie Knight. | Elimination of similar species: Eastern screech owl is grey or red streaked, not brown, and has ear tufts. It is not a long legged owl either. Boreal owl is not known in Iowa, does not have long legs, has a much greyer face and relatively larger head. Northern saw whet owl does not have long legs, has vertical breast streaking, and a relatively larger head. Any of these other owls would be very much out of habitat at the location of the sighting in daylight. | The original documentation form event lasted from 08:00:00/08:02:00.

|
The documentation form by Thomas J. Staudt is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: After recording the above notes I refered [sic] to Peterson's A Field Guide to the Birds East of the Rockies. He indicated that different ages of Grasshopper and Henslow's Sparrows could be mistaken for each other. The lack of prominate [sic] streaking on the breast and flanks on this bird may indicate an adult Grasshopper. However, the streaked olive-greenish head with dark marks in the auricular and the chestnut wing color eliminate the Grasshopper and any other sparrow. | The original documentation form event lasted from 14:30:00/14:40:00.

Wings rounded - not a falcon. Young accipiter (+ many buteos) would be streaked below. Adult accipiters of other kinds would be barred below, but reddish or brown, not gravy. Marsh Hawk would fly with a more leisurely pace + have longer wings. As I saw it, identifications went clicking through my brains one after another. Red tail? No.. Marsh Hawk! - No ... Coopers Hawk! Yes - no - its gray! I certainly did not expect a Goshawk.

Other observers include Reid Allen, Pam Allen, Eugene Armstrong, and Eloise Armstrong. | Elimination of similar species: Red-throated and Yellow-billed Loons could both be eliminated by the horizontal head and bill. This bird also showed a more rounded head and definite black/white contrast which was lacking in the Red-throated Loon I had observed six days earlier. Common Loon was eliminated by combination of size, smaller bill, distinct line separating white and black feathers, and ultimately by the chinstrap. | The original documentation form event lasted from 12:10:00/12:30:00.

Bonaparte's, Ross', Com. Black-headed, Little and Sabine's gulls could all be eliminated by the presence of the collar. Red-legged Kittiwake, the one gull to share the neck collar, was eliminated by the black carpal bar and black tips to tail feathers. | The original documentation form event lasted from 10:10:00/10:30:00.

The documentation form by Ann Johnson is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Bery Engrebretsen, Eugene Armstrong, Eloise Armstrong, Pam Allen, Reid Allen, and others from the Des Moines Audubon. | Elimination of similar species: Most ducks were eliminated by the angle/slope of the head and bill and the size of the bill. Although there was a similarity of head profile to the Common Eider, the facial spots eliminated any eider. Black Scoter would have a more rounded head with a uniform lighter cheek area as opposed to the spots on this bird. White-winged Scoter should have shown more rounded angle form the top of the head to the bill, generally would have less distinct facial spots, and definitely would have had white wing patches when the bird raised its wings. | The original documentation form event lasted from 09:50:00/10:05:00.

Cormorants were eliminated because of straight posture, lack of throat patch, and basic plumage configurations. The bird was obviously larger than a Pied-billed Grebe which would, in addition to the yellow bill, eliminate all but Western Grebe. Western Grebe would have looked much larger than the various waterfowl nearby and would not have shown any rust color on the neck. | The original documentation form event lasted from 12:45:00/13:05:00.

Although some Common Loons may be quite small. I think this bird was too small for even a very small Common Loon. Otherwise, the slender, upturned bill, the head posture, the contrast between the back and the neck, and the gray neck and white throat eliminated Pacific and Common Loons. | The original documentation form event lasted from 13:46:00/15:43:00.
