The documentation form by Andrew S. Fix is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Another observer was Craig Harms. | Elimination of similar species: Only species for possible confusion is Common Goldeneye, which was readily separable by the lack of dark lateral breast band in Common Goldeneye. Lack of dark back with linear row of white spots parallel to midline in Common Goldeneye and the overall whiter appearance of the Common Goldeneye. The final spot of the Barrow's is supposedly a cresent [sic] however this was not clearly evident in this bird, as the spot it had was suggestive of a cresent [sic] when compared to the nearby Common Goldeneye. Voice and behavior were not helpful in separation in this case. | The original documentation form event lasted from 11:30:00/12:00:00.

Other observers include Erik Munson, Wyman Borts, and Jim Sinclair. | Elimination of similar species: Mute swan immature eliminated by bill color. Trumpeter swan eliminated by the presence of many white feathers at this date and concave bill shape. Unable to determine size difference. | The original documentation form event lasted from 14:00:00/14:15:00.

The documentation form by Beth Proescholdt is the earliest and the one that forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Eugene Armstrong and Eloise Armstrong. | Elimination of similar species: Peregrine, imm male, is similar. See above. It was near the size and shape of a Peregrine with long tapered wings & slim body. I knew this wasn't a Peregrine (but an immature male Peregrine & an imm. Mississippi Kite are similar). However the slim, pointed wings of this bird had a different shape; the tail was longer, proportionately, than a Peregrine's, & squared-off rather than tapered like a Peregrine's. I couldn't see if its tail flared at the tip, but in the gap where we had a second, very quick look, Eloise noted its twisting of the tail which is a Mississippi Kite trait. But it was the wing beat that determined absolutely that it was a Mississippi Kite- light, bouyant, [sic] floppy, leisurely, like a moth-so different from the powerful, rapid, direct flight of a Peregrine, and different from any other raptor's flight we have observed. | The original documentation form event lasted from 10:30:00/10:31:00.

|
The documentation form by Brian Blevins is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Another observer was Corey Blevins. | Elimination of similar species: About the only thing that is close is the Bufflehead and they were feeding with this bird, thus contrasting them was easy. The head difference was unmistakable with the buffs having an all dark head with a white spot, where as the smew had a white head with a black patch. | The original documentation form event lasted from 15:13:00/15:36:00.

The definite gray cheek and throat are not present on Surf Scoter. Female Ruddy ducks should be much browner and again have a flattened forehead in line with a larger bill.
