Hickory Hill Park, Iowa City, Johnson County
|
Thick stand of medium size (15'-40') deciduous trees with a dense, moist understory [sic] of shrubs. At the edge of large woods.
|
The documentation form by Carl J. Bendorf is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Thomas H. Kent. | Elimination of similar species: Discussed above. [From description field] The quality and timbre of the call were very similar to that of a Willow Flycatcher. I heard a number of Willow's this spring, and while the quality of the note was similiar, [sic] the form of it was much different. Whereas, the Willow begins with an explosive first note (or syllable) and concludes with an emphatic second and lower pitched note, the bird now calling seemed to be one slurred 'weee-ooo'. This note was quite brief, but it began and immediately slurred up and then back down in pitch. Obviously, at this point I was thinking of Alder Flycatcher. | The original documentation form event lasted from 10:50:00/10:55:00.

The documentation form by James P. Sandrock is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: I eliminated Least and Acadian Flycatchers because of song primarily; also this bird was browner than other Empidonax I am familiar with. | The original documentation form event lasted from 08:45:00/08:50:00.

I was never able to get any more details on the other longspurs. | The original documentation form event occurred around 12:30:00 for less than half an hour and approximately 13:00:00/13:04:00.

The documentation form by Francis L. Moore is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Lynn Heaps. | Elimination of similar species: The only similar species seen in vacinity [sic] and that would prefer being close to this habitat type would be the Willow Flycatcher (E. traillii) which is ruled out because of the 'che-bek' call. | The original documentation form event lasted from 07:30:00/07:45:00.

The documentation form by Barbara L. Wilson is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: these are Rose-breasted Grosbeaks or Blackheaded Grosbeaks. Or hybrids. Unfortunately, the identification depends on things I do not know. Ruth Green informs me that some Rose-breasted Grosbeaks in early September are so orange on the breast one would think them Black-headeds. Are these young Rose-breasted? What about the call? Do Rose-breasted Grosbeaks make a lower-pitched call, more mellow than the distinctive high-pitched call that is the only one I know for them? If you know, please tell me. These were odd-looking grosbeaks but I can't really identify them. | The original documentation form events occurred around 08:45:00 and in the afternoon.

|
The documentation form by Carl Priebe is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. Other observers include Curt Nelson, Eugene Armstrong, and Eloise Armstrong. | Elimination of similar species: [...] The bird was definately [sic] a grosbeak as it had the thick, heavy bill. [...] What makes me think it is a hybrid is that the orange-yellow of ghe [sic] breast was only in the upper part, identical to the rose bib of the Rose-breasted Grosbeak. | The original documentation form event occurred in the afternoon.

The documentation form by Thomas H. Kent is the only one submitted and forms the basis of this record. | Elimination of similar species: I consider any thrush before May 1 to be a Hermit until proven otherwise. I realize how difficult it is to tell these thrushes apart. I have not seen any Hermits in six days of birding over the last two weekends. We have had three warm nights with south winds that have brought early migrants to Iowa. I records [sic] six 1st, 2nd, or 3rd early dates the last two days in southeastern Iowa. In spite of this, I tried to make this bird into a Hermit Thrush. I believe I saw the tail enough times and at enough angles to determine that it wasn't rufous. The face pattern did not in any way suggest to me that this was a Swainson's I find that the density of breast streaking is difficult to judge even on specimens. | The original documentation form event lasted from 07:45:00/07:48:00.
