Rather open urban area on southwest side of Des Moines in bottom land. There is a large deck behind the house with hummingbird feeder hanging from the eve and crab apple tree behind the deck and adjacent to the garage. A large vacant field is behind the property.

I do not know of specific information on bird trafficking in Iowa. Winter males are differentiated from McCowns and Lapland longspurs by the more extensive black mottling on the crown, chest and upper belly, and the tail pattern. Females were distinguished by the tail pattern. Try as I would, I could not stretch the black tail triangle into an inverted black T pattern!! Another observer was Shawn Pfautsch. | Elimination of similar species: Call note and appearance indicated a wren. White supercilliary eliminated House Wren and Winter Wren. Black cap eliminated those two plus Carolina and Bewick's Wren. The lack of crown streaking eliminated Sedge Wren. Habitat was a strong indicator of Marsh Wren and a detraction from all others except, perhaps, a Sedge Wren. | The original documentation form event occurred around 11:00:00.
