Historical Notes Ann Barker was born on April 30th 1946, in Des Moines, Iowa. Ann spent her entire childhood in Des Moines and after high school attended the University of Iowa to study audiology. Ann married William Barker and the couple started bird watching together, quickly becoming dedicated members of the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union. Ann was very active within the IOU, serving as secretary from 1986-1990 and then elected the first female president from 1991-1995. She also served as secretary, vice-president, and president of the Quad City Audubon Society. In addition to these positions, Ann was the spring bird count editor for Iowa Bird Life and the compiler for the Iowa Spring Bird Count. In January 2002 Ann was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. Ann Barker died on August 8, 2002 in Davenport, Iowa. The Iowa Ornithologists’ Union remembers Ann with the Ann Barker Memorial Library which houses digitized issues of Iowa Bird Life dating from 1931-2019.
