The very pale mantle, dark spot behind each eye, and lack of black on the top of the primaries eliminates Franklin's and Laughing gulls. The black underside of the flight feathers, pale gray mantle and wings, white wingtips, and rounded wings eliminates Bonaparte's and Sabine's gulls and kittiwakes. The square tail and wing pattern eliminates Ross' Gull. The lack of a dark auricular patch, contrasting neck pattern, dark back and upperwings, and dark bill color all ruled out Yellow-billed Loon. Red-throated Loon was eliminated by bill shape, neck pattern, the dark back and upperwings, and dark area around the eye. Common Loon was eliminated by the dark back and upperwings, shorter, thicker bill, dark area around the eye, evidence of a chinstrap, neck pattern, and contrast between the pale nape and dark back. The bird was clearly a Pacific or Arctic Loon, but which one? The bird was observed feeding quite near the edge of water and near shore area of the dredge pond which was mostly gumbo-like mudflats with some grassy patches.

[...] It was about one-third the size of a Kildeer, with a short, thin pointed black bill (longer, however, than a Piping Plover's stubbier short bill). [...] Also conspicuous was the black patch which was located just at the top of the 'shoulder' where the wing joined the body and extending a little ways toward the mid-breast area (but nowhere extending as far as the complete or semi-complete breastband common on the Piping Plover).
