There was a Forsters at the slough that evening, in fact, with white primaries. It tried to land on a piling by the other two, but then left. Perhaps the difference in color between a Henslow's face + Grasshopper's face would be hard to tell in a backlit bird. Only Hooded Mergansers have yellow bills or unpatterned heads. Shape and bill color eliminate the grebes. Size eliminates the loons. I really can't think of anything else it could be.
