Field notes were contributed by Fred Lesher, spring and summer 1984. He reported that Margaret M. Anderson had told him that the Iowa Bald Eagle nest at "Dead Haines" (in Allamakee County) had fledged two young. Fourteen Bald Eagles were seen near Lansing and New Albin in the spring, along with nine other bird species, but status of their nests was uncertain. Among eight species observed in the summer, Winter Wrens were heard singing and Orchard Orioles were seen at Wantea Point. This item was used as supporting documentation for the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union Quarterly field report of summer 1984.

Among 26 species sighted, Pied-billed Grebes and Coots were observed feeding their young at Larson Marsh or near Colo, and a Peregrine Falcon in Ames was documented. Among 47 species observed, many Little Blue Herons and Cattle Egrets were seen at Folsom Lake, with the first nesting evidence for Iowa. A Chestnut-sided Warbler was found singing in Grundy County and documented, a Black-necked Stilt was documented at Union Slough NWR, and a Great-tailed Grackle was documented at the IPL Cooling Ponds. Cuculidae were not very common, but Yellow-throated Vireos were in high numbers for southwest Iowa. This item was used as supporting documentation for the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union Quarterly field report of summer 1984.

June-July Iowa observations, Peter C. Petersen, 1984, were made with four other observers. Twenty-one species were listed with dates, number, locations, and comments. Birds with young or acting territorial were a Brown Creeper on Huron Island, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and Scarlet Tanagers near Elkader, a Northern Mockingbird at Big Sand Mound Nature Preserve, and Orchard Orioles at Nye Cemetery. Second supplementary breeding bird census of Big Sand Mound Nature Preserve, Louisa County, Iowa, 1984, was written by Peter C. Petersen. It was submitted to Environmental Services Division, Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company, Davenport, Iowa, July 1984. Three visits were made in 1984 and compared with 1983 to re-evaluate the breeding population of the preserve, with dozens of species listed along with their breeding status. On the title page of the report was a note from Peter C. Petersen to James J. Dinsmore that he had included the most significant records in a separate report. That report listed six species at BSMNP. This item was used as supporting documentation for the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union Quarterly field report of summer 1984.
