Heronry reconnaissance, Mississippi River, April 17, 1984, reported numbers of nests seen there for Great Blue Herons between Skunk Slough, Iowa, and Eagle Point, Iowa. The most nests were at Running Slough. Other birds sighted were Double-crested Cormorants and Great Egrets, although there was a handwritten note "Trip a bit early for Egrets to be incubating." The survey was flown by nongame biologist David Newhouse with two wildlife biologists, Bill Aspelmeier and Bill Ohde, and a pilot, Darryl Miller. This item was used as supporting documentation for the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union Quarterly field report of spring 1984.

Summary of the Iowa Birdline update for June 1-November 15, 1992. Highlights of the update include sightings of a pair of birds with only two previous state records, a Lewis's Woodpecker and a female Vermilion Flycatcher were both seen in October. Other interesting observations were sightings of Black-throated Blue Warbler and a Yellow Rail in September at the IOU fall meeting. In addition, the Lake Red Rock area produced many exciting bird sightings, including a juvenile Laughing Gull, a Mississippi Kite, Red-throated Loons, and Pacific Loons.

Summary of the Iowa Birdline update for September 1-November 30, 2000. Highlights of the update include exceptional sightings of a Pygmy Nuthatch, a Swallow-tailed Kite, a juvenile Parasitic Jaeger, and a family of three Whopping Cranes. Also of note was the extensive number and variety of fall gull sightings that were seen throughout the state. A fall Hawk watch resulted in some interesting observations, including 38 Mississippi Kites as well as large numbers of Prairie Falcons, Northern Goshawks, and Golden Eagles.

Highlights of the update were November sightings of a Red-necked Grebe and a potential first state record observation of a Western Flycatcher. A pair of Townsend's Solitaries and two neck-banded Trumpeter Swans were present for most of the winter. Also of note was a January sighting of a female Mountain Bluebird.

Summary of the Iowa Birdline update for March 15-June 15, 1996. Highlights of an outstanding spring season for rarities include sightings of Mountain Bluebirds, a Townsend's Solitaire and five Cinnamon Teal reports in March. Other interesting observations of note were April sightings of a Ruff, a Fish Crow, Chestnut-collared Longspurs, and an unusually large number of White Faced Ibis. A sighting of Lazuli Buntings as well as a second state record of two Glossy Ibis were reported in May and a MacGillivray's Warbler was spotted in June.
