Heronry reconnaissance, Mississippi River, April 17, 1984, reported numbers of nests seen there for Great Blue Herons between Skunk Slough, Iowa, and Eagle Point, Iowa. The most nests were at Running Slough. Other birds sighted were Double-crested Cormorants and Great Egrets, although there was a handwritten note "Trip a bit early for Egrets to be incubating." The survey was flown by nongame biologist David Newhouse with two wildlife biologists, Bill Aspelmeier and Bill Ohde, and a pilot, Darryl Miller. This item was used as supporting documentation for the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union Quarterly field report of spring 1984.

An essay written by Walter Rosene reporting the findings from a study of nesting Great Horned Owls that he and Bob Walker completed over the course of seven years from 1934-1939. Included in the report are the outcomes from the eggs that were laid and brooded each year, the record of the food found in the nest, and the behavior of the owls. In the seven year study of this particular nesting site, six young birds grew to maturity and left the nest, and all of them were banded.
