June-July Iowa observations, Peter C. Petersen, 1984, were made with four other observers. Twenty-one species were listed with dates, number, locations, and comments. Birds with young or acting territorial were a Brown Creeper on Huron Island, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and Scarlet Tanagers near Elkader, a Northern Mockingbird at Big Sand Mound Nature Preserve, and Orchard Orioles at Nye Cemetery. More details about birds at Big Sand Mound Nature Preserve are provided in a separate report. Of 28 species sighted, Piping Plovers in Pottawattamie County had young and a Mockingbird had a nest near Sidney. A Yellow-breasted Chat was heard singing and the characteristics of a Buff-breasted Sandpiper were observed in detail in Fremont County. A singing Clay-colored Sparrow was observed in detail at Volga River R.A., and Kentucky Warbler was also found singing there. A Chuck-will's-widow was heard calling near Waubonsie. Among 47 species observed, many Little Blue Herons and Cattle Egrets were seen at Folsom Lake, with the first nesting evidence for Iowa. A Chestnut-sided Warbler was found singing in Grundy County and documented, a Black-necked Stilt was documented at Union Slough NWR, and a Great-tailed Grackle was documented at the IPL Cooling Ponds. Cuculidae were not very common, but Yellow-throated Vireos were in high numbers for southwest Iowa. This item was used as supporting documentation for the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union Quarterly field report of summer 1984.

Anderson had told him that the Iowa Bald Eagle nest at "Dead Haines" (in Allamakee County) had fledged two young. Fourteen Bald Eagles were seen near Lansing and New Albin in the spring, along with nine other bird species, but status of their nests was uncertain. Among eight species observed in the summer, Winter Wrens were heard singing and Orchard Orioles were seen at Wantea Point. This item was used as supporting documentation for the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union Quarterly field report of summer 1984.
